Studio Monitor Speakers convert electrical signals into soundwaves, differing from Hi-Fi speakers by of thier more even (or 'flat' ) frequency responses. most are active models with a built in amplifier. Categorisied by size of bass driver, users should consider thier environment for suitabiulity. 'Ultra-Nearfield' models often use DSP for deep bass and can be used close up, 'nearfield' were designed to go on console meter bridges, whilist '3-way', 'midfield' and 'main' monitors have larger cones can produce deep sub bass, but need more distance for drivers to be balanced. DSP room correction or 'calibration' is popular feature in premium models, rebalancing the room sound using a measurement mic.
