PCI/PCI-E Add in Cards

These cards slot into various ports on a motherboard or laptop. Their purpose is to offer features that are not present otherwise, such as networking, USB, Thunderbolt, and WiFi support. These cards typically fit into a spare PCI or PCIe slot on a desktop motherboard or to a dedicated I/O port on a laptop, and they provide an easy way to upgrade the system without having to switch out the motherboard and CPU.

M.2 Network Cards

A network card is designed to connect a laptop, PC, workstation or server to a network, enabling communication with other internal users via network switches or access points; and the outside world via a router.

These cards are designed for an internal M.2 slot of a system and will provide wireless connectivity based on the standard the adapter is based on - either 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7), 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6 / Wi-Fi 6E), 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5) or 802.11n (Wi-Fi 4).

These cards are designed for an internal PCIe slot of a system, feature RJ45 ports and will provide wired connectivity based on Ethernet at speeds up to 10Gb/s.

Usually on laptops and available in two form factors, ExpressCard 34 & ExpressCard 54 which are sized 34 and 54mm respectively.
