NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series Upgrade Guide

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 series is here, bringing with it significant performance increases and new technologies that help drive up frame rates and quality. For those looking to upgrade to this latest generation, especially coming from RTX 30 series or older, there are a few other key parts of your set up that might need to be upgraded to give you the best experience.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series Power Supplies

GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs draw more power in total than older generations of GPU due to having more cores and faster memory so its important to check that your PSU offers sufficient power. These GPUs also use the new higher specification 16pin 12V-2x6 connection vs the older 12VHPWR, 8 pin & 6pin connections from previous generations. Although older PSUs could be compatible to some degree, the latest model PSUs offer native solutions for this connection.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series Monitors

When it comes to upgrading our PC many of us often forget that the monitor is extremely important as it is where you get to ‘see’ all of that new performance. Monitors have come a long way in the last few years, with advances in panel technology leading to higher clarity, low response times, higher refresh rates and much more. Basically, if you are using a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU on an old monitor then you aren’t going to see the benefits that you should.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series CPUS

Especially for gaming your CPU can have an affect on the performance of your GPU if it can’t render frames fast enough. This is called a CPU bottleneck. To get the best performance from a GeForce RTX 50 series GPU its important to understand if your CPU is fast enough to support your GPU at the screen resolution you play at.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series MOTHERBOARDS

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 series GPUs support the latest PCIe Gen 5 standard. For the best performance we recommend that you have a motherboard that supports PCIe Gen 5 on the PCIe slot. Some older generation Motherboards may support PCIe Gen 5 ONLY on the SSD Slots. The newest generation of AMD and Intel Motherboards support PCIe Gen 5 on both the GPU and SSD Slots.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series PC CASES

Graphics cards have increased in size over the last few generations. Notably RTX 40 series and 50 series 80 and 90 class can be significantly larger. Newer PC cases are designed to support this but its possible that users with a 30 series or older GPU could have a case that doesn’t support all of the required dimensions. Be sure to check the dimensions of the GPU you are buying to be sure it will fit in your case.
