Intel produces two distinct types of desktop CPU, Intel Core processors for gaming, content creation and office applications plus Xeon-W processors for professional workstations. The latter have more cores, larger caches and support ECC memory, making them better suited for complex renders, simulations and AI projects.

Intel Core processors are divided up into unique families, each aimed at different price points. The fastest and most powerful processors are Core i9, followed by high-end Core i7 processors, mid-range Core i5 processors and then entry-level Core i3, Pentium and Celeron processors.

The Intel Xeon W-3400 models feature up to 56 cores and 112 threads. They require an Intel W790 chipset motherboard and support up to 4TB of 8-channel DDR ECC Registered memory and 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes. The range includes W9, W7 and W5 models in order of descending performance and price.

The Intel Xeon W-2400 models feature up to 24 cores and 48 threads. They require an Intel W790 chipset motherboard and support up to 2TB of 4-channel DDR ECC Registered memory and 64 PCIe 5.0 lanes. The range includes W7, W5 and W3 models in order of descending performance and price.

Intel 10th generation Core i3 Comet Lake processors have 4 physical cores plus Hyper Threading technology, allowing them to work on up to 8 threads simultaneously.

These CPUs use the new Socket 1200 so require a new Z490 motherboard and are not compatible with Z390 motherboards. However, most Socket 1151 coolers are compatible with Socket 1200 CPUs.
