NAS

Network attached storage (NAS) devices are designed to create easily expandable and secure data storage devices. They usually feature multiple drives, RAID protection options and hot-swap capabilities for reducing down time should drive failure occur. Software-powered features vary depending on the operating system included, and the processor and memory onboard, but may include automated backups, remote access, VPN, encryption, snapshots and advanced RAID configurations.
NAS boxes are either desktop or rackmount form factors, the former being designed for home or small office use and the latter aimed squarely at server room or datacentre use in business. Rackmount units generally features greater capacity and feature sets. They can be purchased as empty chassis for you to add drives to, partially or fully populated.
