Bose have a successful history in innovative speaker design. Their clever waveguide technology, used in a lot of their home Hi-Fi systems is able to deliver big Bose sound from a series of small speakers, giving an immersive experience to its listeners. Many of these innovations first appeared in their Bose Live sound speakers before finding their way into your home setup.

Back in the 1980’s Bose released to the UK the legendary Bose 802 speaker. A portable, composite, passive 300-watt PA speaker with 8 x directional 4.5” transducers, weighing just 14kg, which is less than half the weight of most of its competitors. The Bose 802 was also the first in class to have DSP which plugged in-between your mixer and amplifier, similar to the kind most active speakers have today. This speaker became the favourite of club land and many venues due to its exceptional vocal reproduction, power and reliability.

Fast forward to 2006 with the release of the Bose L1 system. A huge break away from the more conventional Point Source speaker that artists and bands would gig with, as it came in the form of a line array.

The Bose L1 line array uses a combination of 24 x 2.5” speakers stood in a column like a lamp post, drawing 500 watts from the amplifier base which doubled as the speaker support to keep it upright. Along with the matching twin 6.5” subs you have a system capable of giving you 750 watts of immersive sound to your audience, without the need to have a pair of speakers on stands, one either side of stage. Less footprint taken up with equipment, and less to pack away at the end of a gig!

Line arrays are more common in theatre, festival or stadium sound applications. Through design, they are able to push the sound pressure level over distance more efficiently, whilst giving a more consistent sound through its horizontal coverage than a traditional Point source speaker.

The first Bose portable line arrays were originally designed for use in houses of worship, where it can sometimes be difficult to achieve a consistent and audible sound coverage due to large stone pillars and vast reverberant ceiling heights. A significant Bose installation is present in Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia Gothic Church. Each speaker was colour matched to its surrounding background due to the sensitive nature of putting modern things into old buildings.

The latest Bose L1 range is now controllable with the L1 Mix app, allowing you to adjust mixer settings instantly from your mobile device or even walk the room, hear how the mix sounds and fine-tune as you go. Change volume and tone settings in the app and watch the LED encoder on your L1 Pro move to match—the mixer and app are always in sync, in real time. Plus, you have access to the entire ToneMatch library of custom EQ presets. With the L1 Mix app, you get the connectivity that empowers your performance, giving you greater flexibility for on-the-fly tweaks via controls that are intuitive and instant.

The S1 Pro+ is the ultimate all-in-one PA, floor monitor, practice amplifier and primary music system. Multiple positions, supported by Auto EQ, ensure that you always sound your best. And with a three-channel mixer, reverb and Bluetooth streaming along with integrated wireless receivers, the S1 Pro+ is ready to be your go-anywhere PA.
