AMD Ryzen™ 5 1600, S AM4, Six Core, 12 Thread, 3.2GHz, 3.6GHz Turbo, 16MB Cache, 65W, CPU, Retail,+ Wraith Spire Cooler is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid chip. Good IPC and loads of threads for a very reasonable price. Windows 10 not required! I upgraded to this processor from an FX-8350 and I've been very happy with the across-the-board improvements. Twelve threads is more than what most applications know what to do with, so that makes this a great chip for multitasking, running virtual machines, transcoding and streaming, all at the same time if you really wanted to. Gaming performance is much more stable versus the FX-8350. Average frame rate improvements in games like GTA V and The Witcher 3 are mostly insignificant, however, where the older chip would dip to the low 20s or high teens in intensive situations, the Ryzen chip holds steady, providing a much smoother overall experience. Basically, I find myself being bottlenecked by my RX 480 now instead of the CPU which, at 1440p and very high settings in modern titles, is what I would expect. Other tasks such as transcoding video, capturing and recording the desktop, compiling software, etc, are lightning fast compared to the FX-8350, partially due to the extra threads, but mostly because of the improved IPC. 16MB of cache helps a lot too. I haven't overclocked my chip, despite what everyone on the internet advises, because I'm not experienced with CPU overclocking, but I did manage to get my 3200MHz RAM kit to run at full speed, and depending on how many threads an application is using, the cores will turbo up to anywhere between 3.4 and 3.8 GHz on their own. FYI: If you're using Linux and want turbo, then you'll need to use a fairly modern kernel. 4.11 and below would only switch between 1500 and 3200 MHz modes depending on usage, but 4.13 can fine-tune the clock speed and boost it well above the base 3.2 GHz. Speaking of operating systems, do not believe the fearmongering put out by Microsoft about running Windows 7 or 8 on Ryzen, or indeed Threadripper, Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake. Yes, updates will be blocked but there's workarounds for that. Personally, I was able to just plug an already updated install of 8.1 into the new system and it booted up without a hitch. You will be nagged to "upgrade" to Windows 10, but if you disable the Windows Update service, then this goes away. Linux is my daily driver so I don't care too much about security in Windows, but you may want to do some additional research if you're planning on using a non-10 Windows OS as your main, or if you're installing it fresh. At the end of the day though, performance on 8.1 is absolutely fine, and I can't imagine 7 being any different. If you just need a Windows OS to play games and you're avoiding 10 like the black plague, then you absolutely can get older versions to run stably with little effort. In conclusion, if you're looking for a solid, stable, feature-rich and powerful processor, but you don't have stacks of cash to throw at a top-of-the-line new build, then the R5 1600 is a fantastic value option when paired with a decent B350 or X370 motherboard. Ryzen is a significant improvement over the previous generation of AMD processors, and will be very competitive with Intel processors at the same price point. It may lose out slightly to Intel in some gaming scenarios, but for absolutely everything else, it shines.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent choice for a budget build Excellent choice of CPU for a budget build with a great outcome. Keep in mind that this CPU can not utilise the onboard motherboard graphics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet spot for multi-purpose CPU Excellent CPU for a multipurpose machine that does it all: light to medium photo/video editing, gaming, general purpose productivity and some coding. Single-threaded performance isn't stellar but sufficient for the vast majority of uses (including gaming), the multicore performance and the way it handles multitasking is excellent, making it great for a "digital hobbyist" who likes to tinker a lot of with all things computer-related. What impressed me the most is how cool and efficient the chip is, even a small top-down cooler (though it is an aftermarket cooler) in an ITX case (Corsair 250D) keeps it well below 70C, when all cores are used at 100% - this is, of course, without any overclocks and can really depend on the rest of the setup.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great in my first Ryzen build Paired this with a Gigabyte AB350-GAMING 3 and Corsair DDR4 memory, and worked flawlessly first time. The inclusion of the cooler makes life simple, and it seems to keep the CPU plenty cool during gaming sessions. CPU itself is stupidly fast, especially as it is replacing an antiquated Phenom x2 (unlocked to x4), difference is noticeable, especially in games. Not overclocked anything yet, so can't say how that will work out, but nice to have the future option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMD is back! I'm not going to lie, I am an AMD fan. Even though I didn't really need to upgrade from a i7 3770-k, I couldn't resist, as this was getting so many positive reviews! It's been a while since I made any upgrade to my PC so thought I would do an AMD build. Now, the reason why I went Intel because back in 2012, AMD wasn't really releasing anything that could compete with Intel unfortunately. I noticed after upgrading my GPU, my AMD phenom 1090T at the time was bottle necking in some games, so needs must. Come 2017, and I don't game on my PC like I used to so can't go into how it performs in that area, but as far as performance goes, I haven't noticed any issues, apart from overclocking but I think this is down to my RAM and incompatibility at the moment but to be honest, I'm not going to be overclocking. I will get into it more at a later date. Temperatures are amazing. Using the stock cooler, I idle at 30-33c, baring in mind ambient temps are quite warm, even for the UK and load temps, barely touches 60c when gaming. Don't think I'm going to need an after market cooler anytime soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great performance and easily to overclock. This CPU has low temperatures and high performance, with 6 cores, making it better than its intel rival and a great computer upgrade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMD returns with a bargain! Do note, that AMD have officially announced they are not supporting Win7. If like me, you haven't built a new PC in some years, this may come as a surpise. But what does that mean? Ensure you have a PS2 keyboard to hand, or create a boot drive with the USB drivers as AM4 mobos will give you a headache on Win7 install. But the CPU... The Ryzen has replaced an aging (albeit, not bad) I7 930. So for me, there's a definite performance increase. I use my PC for many things from gaming to game development. I'm happy. Also note that the cooler (works great) does not have RGB lighting. Not that that bothered me. So, the specs combined with the price means this is one CPU you should be considering - hopefully it's future is bright once developers get on board with 6+ cores and all the threads that come with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best bang for your buck This Ryzen 1600 is probably one of the best value chips on the market, currently. To get a chip that beats out an i7 in productivity, and still remains a solid gaming chip is a god send. It's incredibly easy to overclock out of the box, coming with one of the best stock coolers in a long time. You can achieve a 3.8ghz over clock without too much trouble as long as you crank the fan settings higher. Although the an overclocked i5 will beat it out in pure fps, Ryzen on will offer a smoother frame rate titles which make use of mult-threading, and offers a better experience if you're streaming.

Questions & Answers

Hi is the Wraith Spire Cooler RGB/LED RING LED NOT JUST LOGO LIGHT UP

Asked by: oldrookie
The cooler I received simply had a cable for the fan, no extra cable for ring LEDs (which don't look to be present on the Wraith Spire cooler I received with this), and nothing lights up when in use.

Thermal paste required?

Do the cpu+cooler already come attached to each other? Is extra thermal paste required/recommended with this, especially for overclocking?
Asked by: Brasscastle
CPU and cooler come separate, but in the same box. Thermal paste is already applied to the bottom of the cooler. Once you remove the cooler from the box, don't put it anywhere but on top of the CPU! In terms of extra paste required for overclocking, can't say, but under general use the cooler keeps the CPU plenty cool enough with the supplied paste.
