Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

Whether the broadcasters are going HD or not, TV sets and projectors are arriving thick and fast which claim to support higher resolutions than regular telly. But HDTV is far from just one standard – it incorporates a couple of different resolutions, two different scanning modes, and a number of different frame rates. In this article, we present a guide to what all the terms actually mean.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

27" Dell S2716DG 144Hz Nvidia G-Sync 2K Gaming Monitor, TN, 2560x1440, 1ms, 1000: 1, Black, DP 1.2/HDMI 1., 4x USB 3.0 is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good bit of kit As a 1st time buyer of a monitor over 60hz, I would say the upgrade is as significant as solid-state hard drives. Even just moving windows around on the desktop is satisfying. Build quality is solid and the stand is great, allowing easy height adjustment, tilt and swivel. Delivery was on time. Over all, very pleased with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from gamers delight After a gtx 1070 upgrade i needed a monitor that could show off the cards power i was not dissapointed with this monitor im not a tec buff but i can clearly pick out my apponents much quicker ,with clear strong colours .Good quality build at a fair price ,only thing im not sure about is when it goes into sleep mode ,you need to press one of a group of buttons at the bottom edge to bring it back to life, as a Gamers monitor at this price i give it a thumbs up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent screen for the money Monitor arrived fast thank you Scan excellent service. Comes in solid packaging, it's well protected. Screen has excellent resolution and detail, and colour reproduction is superb. I've got it on a desktop mount, no problems there. Works lovely with fast paced games, very happy with 144mhz refresh rate and it's super smooth. Had a couple of issues with G-sync going haywire, but reloading drivers sorted that out. Excellent value for money compared to rivals, very reasonably priced for a good quality 27" G-Sync monitor. Very happy with purchase and service from Scan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheaper than the competition, but really top end product The only downside i could find with this monitor is that it has a feature called "deep sleep" which actually turns off the monitor and it won't recover from sleep. This was set by default out of the box and I thought there was an issue with the power saving settings and actually sent it back for an RMA. Would recommend turning that off, then it wakes as normal. Brightness is impressive, colours are great out of the box, I haven't had to do any adjustments. Games are running really smooth on it on my GTX1080, maintaining high fps. As always, gsync is miraculous. This was the cheapest monitor of it's kind when I looked and it's equal to the higher priced options. The build quality is very impressive, the bezels and finish are really beautiful. Very happy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very well made monitor I bought the Dell as to me it was reasonable price for a G-Sync enabled monitor. The colours are very good, not IPS standard though. I have seen some colour banding on mine But this has only really been an issue when using the monitor for desktop work. When Gaming you wouldn;t really notice. Here the superb refresh rate gives you an amazing smooth gaming experience. I'd be more than happy to recommend this monitor to friends or family looking for a gaming monitor. I would be less inclined if they were mostly going to use it for desktop work... but then I would hope they wouldn;t be looking for a G-Sync monitor anyway!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price for a 144hz G-sync 1440 monitor Cheapest 27inch monitor with these specs anywhere on the Web ,fantastic picture ,running battlefield 1 beta at 1440 on ultra and omg eye candy and at this price it's great value, anti glare coating is a little harsh but does not detract from a great gaming experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great price and performance for gaming After looking around for ages for a monitor for a well spec'd gaming PC I had decided on my requirements, larger than my 24" BenQ 144Hz minimum for FPS 1440p G-Sync as I use Nvidia cards A good sturdy base with height adjustment. The Dell met all of these but I was still in two minds about TN or IPS but as I sit in front of the screen all the time and the price when this monitor came on sale I jumped on it. No regrets, the colours are very good for a tn panel and the 1ms is a bonus, games like the recent version of DOOM running at over 100 fps run as smooth as I have ever seen at 1440p with G-sync enabled. As to setting the screen up, it was a doddle, removing a lot the brightness from the standard set-up had it almost perfect. I would recommend this as it is a great upgrade from 1080p and so much easier to run than 4k

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I am hesitant to call this Dell quality, you're paying almost entirely for G-Sync. I was smiling when I took delivery of this monitor on the 9th of April 2016. I settled on this display after seeing a replacement for my Asus PB278Q, which seems to be on its last legs with serious image persistence problems and a couple of dead pixels. As I unpacked the Dell my first impressions were very good; it was very easy to put together and seems to be of very high build quality, it is also quite light for a monitor of this size which was a pleasant surprise. I was very excited as I set it up. Unfortunately all of the excitement rapidly drained out of me when I turned on my computer. The first thing I noticed was that my Windows 10 task bar, which is usually black, was light grey so I double-checked the settings to make sure my theme had not changed. It hadn't. I opened Chrome to perform a Google search for "Dell S2716DG washed out" and was horrified to see the black-on-white text in the bottom half of the browser window was difficult to read due to a lack of contrast. I continued to search and found some advice recommending a custom colour profile from TFT Central, so I set that up but there was zero difference. "It's just the desktop" I thought, "I bought this primarily for games so let's see how the colours look in GTA V and how much of a difference G-Sync makes." Making sure my refresh rate and G-Sync settings were all correct I loaded the game. The good news I can report is that G-Sync does exactly what it says on the tin and provided a very satisfactory experience over using vsync, the bad news is that playing such a vivid and detailed game only emphasised how terrible the colours and contrast are on this monitor. My professional background is in graphical design and I am very familiar with quality TFT and IPS displays. If you covered up the logo and told me this was a budget, no-brand 1440p monitor, not a £450 flagship by one of the best monitor makers out there, I would not have questioned it. I am writing this review on my dying Asus and even though this thing is almost fit for the bin the difference in quality is like night and day. After I return this monitor I think I'll get the train over to Scan and look at some monitors with the naked eye before buying another, panel standards seem to have slipped.
