5" Powered Studio Monitor
Focal - 'Alpha 50'
35-watt/20-watt Bi-amped Powered Studio MonitorFocal is one of the most celebrated names in the Professional Audio world, but for the average project studio, they’re often a little out of reach. Step forth the ‘Alpha 50’! The Focal performance we all know and love, but at an affordable price. The ‘Alpha 50’ is a bi-amped powered studio monitor, sporting many of Focal’s famous features, such as a polyglass cone woofer and inverted-dome tweeter.
The end result is a super-linear frequency response, incredibly accurate mids, and a deep, expansive soundstage. Focal’s ‘Alpha 50’ boasts an impressive 45Hz – 22kHz frequency response, more than enough to handle any projects your studio takes on, and incredibly low directivity. There’s an abundance of customisation onboard too, such as low/high shelving controls, alongside XLR and RCA inputs to handle both pro, and consumer-level hardware. There’s a sensitivity switch too to adapt to quiet sound sources, and energy-saving auto standby mode to finish off the ‘Alpha 50’s expansive feature set.
at a glance
• Low directivity: keeps the same sound throughout the room.
• Tonal balance is identical at low and high volumes; low sensitivity to the wall effects.
• Damping and rigidity: neutrality, no distortion.
• Connect up to 2 audio sources.
• Optimal acoustic integration.
• Reduced power consumption.
Polyglass Cone Woofer
super flat frequency responseThe Alpha 50 features Focal’s infamous polyglass cone woofer. This technology, exclusive to Focal features molten glass micro balls on a cellulose pulp core. This super-stiff design exceeds single-skin Kevlar and is in fact 10x more rigid than polypropylene. But what does this rigid design mean for you?
For starters, it means a super flat frequency response, alongside incredibly accurate midrange definition. Focal’s ‘Alpha 50’ also boasts an acclaimed inverted dome tweeter, which provides super-quick impulse response and an incredibly quick settlement time, alongside superb damping.
The end result is a rich, near-analytical sound with a warm soundstage, flat frequency response curve, and distortion-free audio reproduction. The ‘Alpha 50’’s frequency response is 45Hz – 22kHz, more than enough to handle even your most ambitious of projects.
Customise to your Room
super simple customisation optionsAdjusting the Alpha 50 to your studio is incredibly simple too thanks to its low and high shelving controls. Focused on frequencies around 300Hz, the low shelving control allows you to customise your monitoring system’s important low-end frequencies. If your room tends to attenuate bass, just set the LF shelving control to around +2dB. If, however your room is more neutral, just set it to 0. If nearby a wall, try setting it around -2dB, -4dB or -6dB.
Aimed at the frequencies around 4.5kHz, the high shelving control allows you to tweak for a bright sounding room. Try setting the HF shelving knob to around +2dB in a naturally soft room, 0 in a neutral room, and around -2dB or -3dB in a harsher room.
