Boss - Katana-100 212 Combo MkII
Named after the infamous sword carried by the honourable Samurai warriors of ancient Japan, the Katana is thought of as the finest sword in history, known for its precision, accuracy and ability to effortlessly cut through. The new range of amplifiers from Boss have aptly been named after this legendary tool.
The Evolution of a Modern Classic
The predecessor to the MKII range was widely acclaimed the world over for its faithful recreation of valve tone, with its realistic breakup and incredible dynamic response, without having to crank it up to neighbour disturbing volumes. The MKI range quickly became a fan favourite amongst its price range. No other amp could offer such user friendly customization of sounds, such wealth of onboard Boss effects and faithful valve like tone. Perfect for the touring musician, right through to the guitarist starting out on his journey. The MKII range takes everything that made the MKI what it was, expands the sounds, and pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with modern day amplifiers, without a sky-high price tag.
Five Amp Characters - Ten Overall Tones
The first thing perhaps more noticeable in the MKII range is the increase of amplifier characters. This time around there’s newly voiced variations on the original 5 found on the MKI which allows for greater versatility in tone. This means double the sounds from its predecessor.
The ‘Clean’ channel offers glistening, wide and clear tones. The new variation on this is more ‘American’ in sound, offering a more warm, rounded tone with some top-end sparkle.
Next, you’ll find the ‘Crunch’ setting, which adds the slightest gain and things start to warm up. The MKII’s variation on this adds some of the ‘Brown’ model which heats things up a little further, which really helps the notes sing.
If something with a little more fire is your thing, add some more distortion into the mix and select the ‘Lead’ model, this channel is bursting with scintillating tone perfect for some ripping leads which would sound at home on almost any rock/metal stage. Turn things up even further by trying the MKII’s variation on this for even more firepower. The ‘Brown’ channel replicates that of the classic 80’s high-gain amps, soaked in rich warmth. Switch over to the variation and you’ll find a more modern day iteration of these classic high gain amps.
Boss Amp Technology
We hear a lot about how valve amps are the superior choice nowadays, and there is an argument for this. It is often argued the sonic qualities attached to valve amps are simply much better than that of a solid-state amplifier, many guitarists seek that tone of a valve amp which is achieved when the valve amp is cranked up to ear bleeding volumes. Until recently, this has been something missing from non-valve amps.
The Katana MKII’s voicing come from a genuine class AB power amp that works in conjunction with the specially designed speaker. This is the reason that the sound becomes more responsive and richer overall in tone, once the volume is turned up.
This is where the Katana series have an advantage over valve amplifiers. The variable ‘Power Control’ switch of the MKII series ensures that it’s super easy to find this sweet spot, by allowing us to lower the wattage but maintain the tone. Now you can reach that tonal sweet spot, and not wake the neighbours!
Thanks to the Katana MKII’s on board effects, you can do away with clunky pedal boards. You can use up to 5 effect categories simultaneously. Choose from booster, Modulation, FX, Delay and Reverbs, with 3 variations in each category, adding up to 15 effects which are ready to compliment your tone straight out of the box. Once you’ve found a combination you’re happy with, you can recall these at the press of just one button.
With the Boss ‘Tone Studio’, you can dive headfirst into a world of over 60 different effects, all of which are waiting for you to customise to your liking. The interface itself has been updated since the MKI, making for a more user-friendly, more streamlined editing process. Owners of the MKI range aren’t left out either, all custom made patches can easily be brought over and used on the MKII.

This special edition PRS SE features an Ebony top instead of the usual Flamed affair, and it looks particularly good on this version of the original PRS Classic 24. A fast and easy to play Wide Thin neck and the 25" scale length make for a beautiful instrument at a fraction of the cost of an original.

Fans of metal luminaries Deftones will be excited by the news of Stephen Carpenter’s signature humbuckers designed in conjunction with Fishman, and they should be. Both of Carpenter’s humbuckers come loaded with 2 distinct voices inside each pickup. Voice 1 is based on the radical ‘Fluence Core’, which is at the centre of the Fluence tone. Using the Fluence Core as a starting point, Fishman worked closely with the Deftones axeman to create these monolithic sounding humbuckers.
