Product Overview

8-Port Gigabit Easy Smart Managed Switch

The TL-SG108E 8-Port Gigabit Easy Smart switch is an ideal upgrade from an unmanaged switch, designed for Small and Medium Business networks that require simple network management. Network administrators can effectively monitor traffic via Port Mirroring, Loop Prevention and Cable Diagnostics features. To optimise traffic on your business network, TL-SG108E offers both port and tag based QoS to keep latency-sensitive traffic moving smoothly and jitter-free. Additionally, port-based, tag-based and MTU VLAN can improve security and meet more network segmentation requirements. Moreover, with its innovative energy-efficient technology, the TL-SG108E can save up to 80% of power consumption, making it an eco-friendly solution for your business network.

Simple & Effective Management

TP-LINK's Gigabit Easy Smart switch, TL-SG108E offers network monitoring for users to observe traffic behaviour. With Port Mirroring, Loop Prevention and Cable Diagnostics features, TL-SG108E can identify and even locate connection problems on your business network. Moreover, administrators can designate the priority of the traffic based on Port Priority and 802.1P Priority, to ensure that voice and video are always clear, smooth and lag-free. Additionally, to improve security and network performance, TL-SG108E supports MTU VLAN, port-based VLAN and 802.1Q-based VLAN functions. TL-SG108E is an upgrade from the plug-and-play Unmanaged Switch, delivering great value while empowering your network and similarly delivering great value to the end user.

Go Green with your Ethernet

You now have the choice to go green when upgrading to a gigabit network! This new generation of TL-SG108E 8-Port Gigabit Easy Smart Switch features the latest energy-efficient technologies that can greatly expand your network's capacity with much less power. It automatically adjusts power consumption according to the link status and cable length to limit the carbon footprint of your network.

Power Down Idle Ports

When a computer or network equipment is off, the corresponding port of a traditional switch will continue to consume considerable amounts of power. The TL-SG108E can automatically detect the link status of each port and reduce the power consumption of ports that are idle.

Power Budget According to Cable Length

Ideally, shorter cables would use less power with less power degradation over their length; this is not the case with most devices as they will use the same amount of power across the cable regardless of whether it is 10 or 50 meters in length. The TL-SG108E analyses the length of the Ethernet cable connected and adjusts the power usage accordingly, rather than keeping the power consumption in a conventional solution.

Ease of Use

TL-SG108E is easy to use and manage. Auto MDI/MDI-X crossover on all ports eliminate the need for crossover cables or uplink ports. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of a network device (either 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance. Its compact size makes it ideal for desktops with limited space while also being Rack-mountable, convenient and safe. Dynamic LED lights provide real-time work status display and basic fault diagnosis.

Buying Guide
8 Port TP-LINK TL-SG108E Gigabit EasySmart Network Switch, Unmanaged, for Small/Medium Business Networks is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great home switch with VLAN support. I’ve recently upgraded my home network to use a bunch of these 8, 16, and 24 port switches. Simple to configure and using VLANs gives me good network segregation and has tidied my infrastructure up considerably. The only thing to note - slight confusion as the switch was labelled “unmanaged”, yet it does support all the management functionality of the easy smart switch family, via a web browser or their admin software.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reasonably Good Gigabit VLAN capable switch This is a reasonably good switch, I bought it to do some trunking in my hallway, for which the design required VLANs and Quietness. From a Cisco background the configuration of VLAN trunks and access ports is a little strange, but once you understand how it works it does the trick!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from advanced features at a reasonable price A previous switch failed, so the TP-Link unit was bought as a replacement. The advanced features were the deciding factor in the choice. Port mirroring is a useful tool for some of the work I do. The TP-Link comes with some software, but it's for windows only. Not much use in a Linux setup. also a bit pointless as the TP-Link has a fully enabled web interface. Turn the device over to find the default credentials. Takes all of 30 seconds to set up. The only criticism I have, and this applies to many other types and makes of equipment, is the power connector. A standard coaxial type. Works well enough as a power plug, but there is NO WAY to secure it. One inadvertent pull on the cable and the plug will pop out, not something you want to have happen in any network. A couple of holes to pass a cable-tie through would do the job. Better still a different type of connector. Apart from that I expect the unit to give many years of trouble free operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Switch Very happy with this switch, this was a replacement for an old unmanaged Belkin switch. The power usage is less than half of the Belkin (according to TP Link anyway) and you can feel it does not get anywhere near as hot even when all 8 port are in use. The management software for the easy smart switch is easy to use to, providing all the information you need and allowing you to ‘manage’ the switch. There are some very useful functions such as being able to disable ports that are not in use, thus reducing power consumption, create a port trunk, check port stats, create VLANS, and also setup QoS, bandwidth control and storm control all of which can be rather useful if you know how to utilise them. While the ‘management’ capability is by no means in the realm of SME or Enterprise style ‘managed’ switches, it has plenty to offer and is easy to setup, and for a small business or home user who desire more traffic control and have the knowledge or desire to learn how to config such a device, then this switch is a fantastic buy. My only negative point, I wish the power cable/socket was on the same side as the network ports, just makes life easier when wall mounting it if all cables are pointing/travelling in the same direction, that’s just my personal preference.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for the price, it is managed, but only via a Windows app (no WWW GUI or CLI) Needed a VLAN capable switch for a LAN extension project, and at the price (22 quid +VAT for me) it seemed the perfect solution. Upside - it does what is says on the tin, it's an 8 port manageable VLAN capable switch with (limited) trunking capability. Unlike some other cheap switches I've had, it has been operational for weeks with no need to power-cycle, so it appears reliable. Downside - If you do what I did, and skim the online manual, you will have thought it had a WWW management interface - it doesn't! Its bigger brothers (16 and 24 port) do, but this one has a management app that will only run on a Windows box (which is a shame as it appears to be a java app!) that you need in order to perform any configuration - be advised, if you need to be able to remote-in to change a port VLAN, you will be out of luck! If you want something to configure statically and forget - no problem. Also, this means it has no SNMP, and no way of getting stats off the switch - so it's manage-ish rather than managed. Overall, it did what I needed it to do, but I wish the manual and datasheet was a bit more honest, sat here on this LINUX ONLY network!

Is there a web interface for management?

Does this switch provide a web-based interface for management. Some reviews suggest there is, and other say that it needs a Windows application to be managed.
Asked by: viharm
Yes, despite saying it is “unmanaged”, you can configure it using a web browser, or their client software.
