Whether the broadcasters are going HD or not, TV sets and projectors are arriving thick and fast which claim to support higher resolutions than regular telly. But HDTV is far from just one standard – it incorporates a couple of different resolutions, two different scanning modes, and a number of different frame rates. In this article, we present a guide to what all the terms actually mean.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High refresh rate. Low resonse time. This is possibly one the best monitors on the market, it's pricey at nearly £600 at time purchase but it's a very good unit. Firstly and most likely it's biggest selling point, is that it boasts a sensational refresh rate at an overclocked 165mhz. Combined with Nvidia G-SYNC technology this means screen tearing is wiped out, fast rotation on FPS games such Call of Duty or Battlefield where you might be inclined to use a high DPI mouse for fast turning you'll find that the screen refresh is smooth and there is very little ghosting (where an after effect or blurring of images is left on the screen for a short time), although ghosting does still exist it stops very rapidly meaning the detail returns almost instantly. The 1ms response time is also amazing so as soon as you do anything with the mouse or keyboard you see it on screen with no delay. One downside many have to bring forth other than the price being more than most monitors or 4k tvs is that it's not 4k, running at only 2560x1440 so basically 2k, but consider the fact that a 4k monitor will set you back twice the price of this if you want one with a refresh rate greater than 60mhz you soon see why this realistically the market leader in gaming monitors. This unit ships with a Display Port cable and HDMI cable and an AC cable for power and has two built in USB 3.0 ports recessed under the back of the screen that you run off one USB from your PC to a separate input on the monitor turning one USB from the PC into two from the monitor, great for USB headsets or charging a device. The base is a good size and sturdy and the monitor has full tilt, swivel and rise and lower functionality meaning you can put at the exact comfortable angle you want.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 27" Asus PG278QR ROG Swift was a great buy This is a great gaming monitor & i would recommend Scan & this monitor to any serious gamer. Arrived on time & had no dead pixels or backlight bleed ! 1440p it gives you that extra picture clarity & 144hz gaming feels so smooth in FPS games. You'll need to set up the gamma from your graphics card ( I used Nvidia control panel ) As the gamma from the monitor was set a little high out the box, but picture quality other than that was very good indeed. For a TN panel it's the best i've seen, has great colour and even very good viewing angles. sRGB mode gives very accurate colours & the low blue lighting modes are great at eliminating eye strain. So if your thinking of getting this monitor ? I'd say get it ! I've used Scan before for my high end PC build & this monitor. I would choose them over all other online retailers & will use Scan for all my PC products in the future. Had a very happy Christmass with this :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ROG Swift PG278QR Monitor was delivered really fast and well packaged. The monitor was very nice and easy to set up. Unfortunately the image quality through the display port at 144htz on a 1440 monitor degraded and colours were distorted. It worked fine through HDMI at 60htz. I bought a replacement DP cable but this did not cure the issue. I run an i76700 gtx1080 system brand new. In the process of returning for a replacement where an update will follow. Scan have been helpful throughout the process.

Questions & Answers

GFX 980ti

Just wondering, before spending this amount of money would it be ok to run this on a single gfx 980ti with another monitor for dual?? Also could it be mounted thanks...
Asked by: ObsidianShard
I'm assuming you mean GTX 980ti, in which case yes, cos that's what I use. The 980ti has two Display Port outputs and two HDMI outputs so running duel or even triple monitors is possible. As for wall mounting I don't believe that is possible due the tilt and swivel function of the stand.
