Choosing a monitor is not an easy decision to make, and not just because of the large number of variations in resolution, refresh rates, sizes and connectivity options. There are also varying panel technologies used to form each display that need to be considered. These panel technologies can be grouped into three broad categories which cover the vast majority of monitors sold in the consumer market.

As you’ll all likely know by now, DVI is the current standard for connection of a PC or other display generator to a digital display output. You’ll recognise the multi-pin connector and know that almost all modern LCD displays have the corresponding input connector, for feeding from your PC. But do you know how DVI works? This TekSpek seeks to teach you how.

There’s a lot more to High Definition than just having the ability to run your screen at the right resolution. With more than one type of connection available, and the thorny subject of signal encryption to contend with, just because your monitor and graphics are capable of 1,920 x 1,080 or better does not necessarily mean they will be able to display HDTV in all its glory.

Reviews
27" Acer XV272U QHD Gaming Monitor, IPS, 2560x1440, 144Hz, 1ms, FreeSync, 400cd/m², HDMI/DP/USB is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best 144Hz gaming monitor under 500GBP I have had this monitor for about a 3 weeks now and have the following experience to share: There are a few poor reviews you will see elsewhere with complaints about "light bleed" on this IPS panel. Turn the brightness down, this is a blindingly bright screen and yes you will see the backlight bleed mentioned at 60% brightness or higher. For me the comfort level is around 30-35% brightness when HDR is enabled. The colour gamut is fantastic, it is one of the best I have seen from an LCD panel. Only OLED displays produce notably richer colours in my experience. Viewing angle is relatively comfortable to +/- 30 degrees, exceeding this you will note colour saturation. I run this monitor on an 2080 and I have experienced no issues with FreeSync enabled, I run the monitor at 120Hz to enable the HDR feature. The only reason I give this monitor a 4 star rating is because the VESA mount at the back is recessed into the furniture and a very tight fit. Not all brackets will fit within the recessed cavity, I had to use a grinder to shave a few millimetres off my mounting bracket to get it to fit.
