DaVinci Resolve Features
DaVinci Resolve is Blackmagic's most advanced video editor, with a familiar look and feel, it provides innovative features to provide you the tools to create amazing content.
Create, edit and implement outstanding visual effects in both 2D or 3D, seamlessly built into DaVinci Resolve.
Blackmagic pride themselves on having created Hollywood's most advanced and accurate colour corrector. The intuitive UI allows for the perfect mood or look to be defined either through simpler tools or far more advanced sets.
No longer do you need to load up another piece of software or handover to another section of post-production, as Blackmagic have built Fairlight, their very own audio post-production section of DaVinci Resolve.
DaVinci Resolve features support for a wide variety of file formats, with ingestion and organisation being designed to ensure a quick workflow.
DaVinci Resolve is the only post-production software to allow you to collaborate with other users on the same project, at the same time. There's a chat function and protection options to keep your work out the way of others.
Introducing the Cut Page
Streamlined for a purpose
The main new feature is the Cut Page. Made with quick edits in mind, this is perfect for journalists, students, beginners, vloggers and high end studios. Because of its compressed feature set, it’s actually ideal for smaller screens, but everything that is done in the Cut Page, does translate over to the fully fledged video editing page, so you Cut, then Edit with a little more finesse or add effects not available in in the Cut Page by itself.
A different way to edit
Source Tape displays all your clips in one long timeline in the Source window, which you can then flow through seamlessly without having to click each clip individually. This reduces work time when you’re on a tight deadline, but also, helps with interviews or even gameplay.
The Cut Page introduces a unique timeline to fit in with the streamlined workflow. Chunkier and easy to scrub through, it’s far easier to edit on a smaller screen or quick projects with this view!
Resolve will fly through your timeline so you can make sure your content is up to scratch, without having to sit through the whole thing in real time.
While the Cut Page might reduce down the workflow by streamlining the core features, but all the transform controls you need are still there. Change audio levels, zooms and crop or add text without having to leave the Cut page at all!
Take control of the timeline
Let DaVinci Resolve take control of where the clip needs to go. This is perfect for quick edits, placing the clip in the nearest edit.
Append to End
Immediately add a clip to the very end of the timeline, for building out an edit incredibly quickly.
Instantly replace a clip with another on the timeline, even if it’s a different length. Resolve will adjust the timeline to accommodate it.
Want to create two shots out of the single one you got originally? Shoot wide, get a sneaky zoom with this function.
Place on Top
Place a source on top of the background in the timeline, without having to drag and drop into place.
This is brilliant for those that use sync timecodes and multiple cameras, as Resolve will automatically match source to timeline and places it on top.
New Features: Facial Recognition
Resolve 16 is a huge update for Blackmagic. The host of new features include Facial Recognition. You no longer have to hunt for each shot, but have DaVinci Neural Engine create media bins for individuals based on their face. This really cuts down time editing on large productions and complex projects..
New Features: Frame.io integration
Don’t bog you or your team down when you’re in the middle of an edit and need feedback. Don’t confuse a client by sending them a link to a Dropbox or Google Drive where you’ve forgotten the permissions. DaVinci Resolve now supports Frame.io, a collaborative piece of software that annotates and shares videos.
New Features: Custom Sizes
Da Vincis resolve's ability to deal with multiple timelines at once helps with modern social media requirments. In the same Project you can set different timelines at different resolutions to meet the needs of vertical, square and landscape video.
A different way to edit
Blackmagic have made multiple changes to things under the hood of DaVinci Resolve. This includes a new way to keep on top of Keyframes with the Curve Editor, letting you animate faster than before
A refreshed Image Stabilisation now lives in the Edit Page, with options to make it look how you want. Their Neural Engine manages the new Speed Warping mechanic, which will make estimations and frame rate conversions far easier than before.
Lastly is Audio Scrubbing in a new Tape Style, which pitch correction to find the right clip you need.
Fusion gets even stronger
The Fusion page has been made faster, more agile and just easier to use. With GPUs getting more powerful, Blackmagic are fully taking advantage of it by Accelerated Tools to speed up effects work, faster 3D performance and with RAM, they’re ensuring your memory is better managed, which goes all the way down to caching your projects. Trackers and Masks have been made much quicker and more accurate to operate too.
DaVinci Resolve Colour page is, to some, the core component of the software. People trust in Blackmagic’s colour science to bring their projects to life. That’s why they’ve added quality of life improvements (Copy and Paste attributes, Independent Channels and improved plugin support). Scopes and histograms now provide more information, you can view everything on your main monitor and video output with an easy drop down menu and organising your grades has been improved too. DaVinci’s Neural Engine will also be utilised to add Auto Colour Balancing and Matching.
Fairlight Audio in 2019
Updates to the audio side of DaVinci Resolve include a new Immersive 3D Audio mode to take advantage of new formats like Dolby Atmos. You have access to 500 free sounds to use, which you can download directly in Resolve and use however you wish. Elastic Wave stretches the audio out so you can match clips up for ADR, retiming etc., but doesn’t change the pitch.
