How to pick the perfect VR headset

No matter how large a gaming monitor you choose to buy, there will always be an element of peripheral distraction from the environment around it. Virtual Reality (VR) addresses this by use of a head mounted display that immerses you completely in the game. VR also allows for more natural head movement - look left and see what’s there from your cockpit window in a flight sim - or physically move around your first-person shooter environment.

There are a number of ways that VR can be integrated into your gaming experience - either just using a headset with other game controllers such as steering wheels or flight yokes to provide a much more complete visual experience, or by adding hand held controllers to make physical actions within a game rather than remaining static at a keyboard and mouse. Lastly you can create a room scale environment allowing full physical interaction if the game requires it.

Room Scale VR

It is fair to say that the larger the speaker unit the more power it will have, and the better sound as there is more room for bass ports and larger drivers. Having said that, we’d recommend listening to speakers prior to purchase in the Scan showroom if possible as nothing can replace actually hearing speakers in action.

More expensive speakers will likely have features such as Dolby or DTS audio compatibility to get the best from encoded soundtracks and game audio. Technology like this will offer improved sound quality but often heavily relies on optimum placing of speakers, especially in 5.1 or 7.1 surround set-ups, so unless you can place your speakers ideally around your PC, it may not be worth the extra investment.

The VR display is created when a video signal is sent the headset display. VR headsets tend to use two displays - one for each eye - with lenses placed between your eyes to focus and reshape the picture for each eye and create a stereoscopic 3D image by angling the two 2D images to mimic how each of our two eyes views the world ever-so-slightly differently. These two images and wraparound nature of the headset (like goggles) combine to increase immersion by delivering a wide field of view.

A number of components make up a VR system for gaming - usually the headset and controllers are supplied in a kit with a number of other accessories such as charging cables, adapters and batteries. It is worth looking at the battery life of a headset as this is likely to be the limiting factor of how long a VR gaming session can be. If longer sessions are regularly required then additional back-pack style battery packs can be added to provide more power.

Additional accessories such as extension cables and stands are available to create your perfect VR gaming environment.
