Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe)
Date Issued: 20th Oct 2008

The purpose of this TekSpek is to delineate the publicly known features of Intel’s next generation desktop microarchitecture. Codenamed Conroe and officially titled Intel Core 2 Duo, it’s loosely based on the current mobile Yonah (Core Duo) underpinnings.

The modern PC is potentially a mass of heat output and heat production hot spots. With CPUs rated at more than 100W of heat output, single graphics boards carrying similar ratings (and people want to run two!), multiple hard drives the norm, lots of memory and mainboards covered in heatpipes to combat toasty core logic and PWM circuits, a PC appreciably warming up a room when it’s working hard is no joke.

Date Issued: 14th Jun 2008

There’s been a lot of hype about Intel’s Core 2 recently, even since they launched Core in fact. Words like Conroe, Badaxe and Allendale have been flying around. The bottom line is that Core 2 is the name of Intel’s latest line of CPUs, based on a new micro-architecture, designed for speed and efficiency.

Date Issued: 5th Mar 2007

Anybody who has been near their share of computer systems will appreciate that not all systems make the same amount of noise. There are a number of reasons for why this is so. Firstly, a computer makes noise for different reasons. Generally, anything mechanical is going to make noise.

Zalman CNPS8900-Quiet Ultra Quiet Slim CPU Cooler is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very quiet, but not for overclockers. I got this to cool my 4770k inside the extremely tight mini ITX Silverstone RVZ01 case. Under load, it's whisper quiet, despite the fact that in this case, it is right next to an external vent. In larger cases where there is better buffering against noise, you're unlikely to hear this cooler at all, which makes it a great budget choice to replace the stock cooler in an HTPC. As for temps, my i7 reached 96°C in a few minutes under load at 4.4GHz, so I wouldn't recommend this to cool an overclocked Haswell chip. I think the only difference between this and the Extreme version is the lower maximum fan RPM for this model. Installation is pretty easy. The heatsink is quite wide and low (they pack a lot of heatsink in for a low profile cooler), so you may need to install LP RAM, especially on a mITX board. Due to interference with the RAM sticks, I had to install it with the copper pipes pointing vertically as opposed to horizontally, which is less efficient for cooling when you have the board vertical.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quiet and cool. I was running an Intel Q9550 on stock cooler in a Silverstone GD01-MX. This is a great upgrade. Slightly difficult to get the base support screwed to the motherboard backing holders, but steady perseverance pays off. It'd be nice if I can move this to a Broadwell next year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet great value cooler I'm using this in an HTPC rig where quiet cooling is really important. It was easy to install, gives me great temps and is almost silent. I spent a lot of time looking for a cooler, reading reviews and planning my rig. This was highly recommended and i can see why. Get one!
