Constructed from four plies of birch and two plies of maple, the shell gives the drum a balanced character with plenty of projection, making it equally at home in a full drum kit or as a standalone snare for recording and live work. The 6.5" depth gives the snare a good amount of body and low-end weight, while the birch content helps retain the attack and definition needed to cut through a busy mix. The result is a versatile wooden snare with enough warmth for controlled studio work, but plenty of presence for louder playing.

Tama has fitted the Starclassic Performer with 10-hole die-cast hoops, helping to keep the drum's tuning stable while giving the rimshots and cross-stick work a firm, defined response. The MLS30A/MLS30B strainer system provides straightforward control over the snare wires, while the supplied MS20R14S wires and Evans G1 batter and Hazy 300 resonant heads give the drum a solid starting point straight out of the box.
