Intel Branding Part I

Intel’s been on a mission of late. That mission revolves around grouping and standardising key technologies under various banners that are designed to ensure hardware compatibility and consumer ease of use. We’ll take a closer look at three such technologies that fall under the headings of Centrino, Viiv, and vPro, respectively.

The modern PC is potentially a mass of heat output and heat production hot spots. With CPUs rated at more than 100W of heat output, single graphics boards carrying similar ratings (and people want to run two!), multiple hard drives the norm, lots of memory and mainboards covered in heatpipes to combat toasty core logic and PWM circuits, a PC appreciably warming up a room when it’s working hard is no joke.

There’s been a lot of hype about Intel’s Core 2 recently, even since they launched Core in fact. Words like Conroe, Badaxe and Allendale have been flying around. The bottom line is that Core 2 is the name of Intel’s latest line of CPUs, based on a new micro-architecture, designed for speed and efficiency.

Anybody who has been near their share of computer systems will appreciate that not all systems make the same amount of noise. There are a number of reasons for why this is so. Firstly, a computer makes noise for different reasons. Generally, anything mechanical is going to make noise.

Silverstone AR01 Argon CPU Cooler with Silent 120mm PWM Fan S775/1155/1156/1150/1151/1366/2011/ AM2/AM3/FM1/FM2 is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for. Just a bog standard 3rd party cooler. Does the job. Be careful not to do the 2 cooler bracket screws up too tight. Your motherboard will bend and will not work, It may damage the RAM slots too due to the motherboard bending too much. Fan is a bit on the noisy side.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good value for money Does what it says on the tin but sadly couldn't use it as wasn't enough cooling for my processor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely quiet and performs well Installation instructions are on a booklet in tiny print. They could be a lot better. Needed to refer to a Youtube video for step-by-step guide on installing the cooler. However when installed it is very quiet to run and has performed to expectations. I can't compare with other coolers but this one has done the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant cooler, excellent value This is a cracking cooler at a cracking price. I was using it for a quiet rig and even without adjusting the PWM settings in the BIOS found it possible to get a cool chip that was pretty nearly inaudible. During testing I did overclock the chip and at high airflows there is of course some noise: like all things in life you have to find the right balance for what you are trying to achieve. Don't in any way be put off about fitting this cooler: it is one of the simplest out there. Do check it will fit in your case - it is quite tall at 160mm. However, it is not very deep (the front of the fan is just 38mm from the centre of the CPU socket) and I would have thought that getting in the way of your memory sockets is unlikely to be an issue on most boards. Another reviewer commented about the poor instructions (but don't all coolers seem to come with poor instructions?). I've just checked on the manufacturer's website and there is a video showing how to fit it, should you get stuck. Again, another reviewer commented about the thermal paste: there is in my view enough included to allow you to remove and reposition the cooler should you need to do so.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very good but sound issues. Excellent cooler, great temps, gets the job done at a low price, my only issue with this cooler was the fan, I was expecting a fantastic low noise at 100% speed. How wrong I was, as at max usage while gaming this kicked in pretty loud, I have swapped these out with two arctic pwm fans, and it is fan-tastic :p gives you extra rubber mounts so you can mount two fans, which was great. and just say fits in my nzxt 210 elite, if you're thinking about one of these cases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple Single Fan CPU Cooler Dropped about 10'C off the stock Intel cooler I was previously using. Easy to fit, and I liked the rubber brackets for the fan - far simpler than the usual wire clip and also reduces vibration. Only irritation is that the fan comes with a silver sticker that is off centre. Also, a small sachet of thermal paste, which is a one use item. I've bought similarly priced products before - and received a reusable tube of paste in case you have to adjust your fitting. Absolutely not worth criticising the product if that is all that's disappointing about it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from easy peasy Just so easy to put on and nice and quite. Normally used freezer pro. But this is just so easy to fit.
