Many compact amplifiers do not have 4 pin connection, but especially as the new Audeze LCD series are starting to come with combo cables with a 4pin XLR option as standard, this can be used to (almost) double the output power and headroom of a 'single ended' output such as a 3.5mm or 6.35mm Jack.
