Intel 9th Gen Core 9900K Processor
Date Issued: 19th Oct 2018

Intel had the desktop CPU market sewn-up for many years until AMD hit back 18 months ago with its all-new Ryzen processors that offered a competent architecture laced with more cores and threads than Intel offered at the same price points.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gaming excellence First upgrade since a 4690k so this is a significant leap forward. An easy OC to 5ghz if numbers are your thing but even at stock this will do very nicely. Definitely gets toasty so will need decent cooling, ie I'm cooling it with AIO 280mm rad. This keeps temps mid 50s gaming, if you're stress testing then of course you will still see 80s/90s perhaps depending on the test. I am purely using the PC for games, if you're more weighted to production then the Ryzen chips are maybe more appealing and better value. I would have needed a new cooling solution so the 9900k was a better deal for me (plus a free copy of RDR2). I'm happy which is what counts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive This is replacing my i7-6700K which absolutely refused to go beyond 4.5GHz with 1.36V and eventually I had to lower it to 4.3GHz with 1.295V. Also I could never run my RAM at the rated speed of 3200 so was running at 2666. The 9900K doesn't break a sweat hitting 5.0GHz in light usage and without going over 1.3V! Under full load it will run at 4.7GHz again not going over 1.3V. This is all with my RAM running at 3200 as well!! To me this is insane that it can do all of this with an extra 4 cores! Sure this CPU is still 14nm but you can see and feel how much Intel has refined this process. The performance out the box is a huge improvement for me so I don't feel the need to overclock. That's for another day. As for temperatures... well first let me tell you that I am using a Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler. Running Linpack Extreme stress test with 30GB of memory the max temperature was 94C. I know this sounds bad but this is just the absolute highest it went. It was averaging about 87-88C. It's named Extreme for a reason because it puts the CPU under immense and unrealistic loads. You will never be able to stress your system anywhere near this kind of load. In IntelBurnTest (Maximum Stress) the max temperature was 74C so that's a solid 20C cooler immediately which goes to show just how extreme Linpack really is. IntelBurnTest is also a really demanding program so again it'll be really hard for you to put your system under this kind of load during realistic usage. In games I was sitting at 40-50C mostly. It went to about 60C sometimes but even that is well within reason but that's the highest it went. I'm not sure what else I can say about it. It performs very well. Price is higher compared to the new AMD cpus but it makes little difference in the end because Z390 boards are cheaper than X570 boards. I got a Z390 Aorus Master which cost £280. The AMD equivalent cost £390! The packaging it came in is nice but I would've been happy with just the cardboard box instead of the plastic case. I was actually going to buy the OEM product but it was out of stock. I guess the case will look nice on display. Overall I'm really happy and impressed with the CPU. I would definitely recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute BEAST I was very sceptical about this before I bought it. Im streaming and gaming a lot and this cpu is a BEAST. It allows me to do stuff I couldn't do before on completely different level. It stays very cool on my Corsair H100i even when streaming and gaming which is very cpu heavy temps stay at 65 degrees!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does all what it says if u have the cooling All I can say its the best of the best at this time of writing however you need pretty strong cooling for this or its going to over heat easily. I had a problem with this CPU as my motherboard is a z370 it was either the firmwere or just gigabyte z370 motherboards (as the cpu was released after these motherboards and it only was compatible if u updated the BIOS) in general where I had to set my voltage for the cpu to not overheat on DEFAULT settings. But Overall it does what it does the value obviously isnt best to price per performance against other/older cpus but I wanted the best of the best at the time. So I don't recommend for most other than if u want to show off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a gaming beast. You know when you have watched reviews of the i9 9900k and the reviewer has said they are not worth the money for the benefit you will get? They are wrong. I upgraded from a coffee-lake i7 and the difference was astounding. Match it with a RTX2080ti, and games become something you have only dreamed of till now. It can run a bit warm so I would recommend a 320 AIO for cooling. Stressed, my i9 temp never goes beyond 50c, so you can tame this beast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The new i7 For those who haven't noticed, the latest incarnation of Intel's i7 has dropped it's multi-threading ability. Although there's been a bit of rejigging regarding the number of cores, the i7 seems to have taken a bit of a backward step with the latest Coffee Lake 9th generation refresh. The i9 is now the new multi-core, multi-threaded CPU to go for if you really must have Intel. Anything else and Threadrippers are still probably going to give you more bang for your buck (as long as you can afford the extra electricity to run them). Those in any doubt re the latest i7 vs the i9 should refer to the excellent article in Custom PC a couple of months ago which clearly sets the case for both why the i7 has lost it's way and why the i9 is the one to go for. Bought mine to put in a new small server. As you'd almost certainly expect for a chip in this price bracket, so far it hasn't been overclocked in any way and hasn't broken a sweat. At the moment multi-threading isn't really needed for today's games, but if you also like your multimedia or do a lot of rendering then this will certainly benefit from the extra cores and threads compared to the latest i7. Amongst other things my server is now running a custom ARK server, and so far doesn't show any signs of stalling with multiple users online when it performs a world save mid-game. This probably has something to do with the checkbox in Server Manager being ticked for 'Use all cores', but it shows the power of this chip. If you can afford one then definitely have it on your short-list to give yourself some future proofing. A lot of practical apps can already make use of the multi-threading, and it's only a matter of time before the next generation of games start to follow suit too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive but glad I picked it up over the 9700k I'm not an enthusiast that tries to overclock everything on my desktop, but I was easily able to overclock it to over 5.1GHz with no crazy heat issues on a corsair H150i and its great. Coming from an i7 3820 after my CPU was severely bottle necking my GPU, I just wanted to play my games and have the best experience possible with what little time I have left after work. I saw frame rates jump from 45-70 FPS on some games with my 1080ti not able to even stretch its legs, to over 120-160 FPS on the same games. my experiences over the past month with this new build have been nothing but incredible. Note: one of my concerns with the 9900k was the thermal issues pointed out on many reviewers videos and on the forums, I have not experienced any of this through my every day use while gaming, the hottest I have ever seen it was a package temp of 56 Degrees C with an ambient room temp of 25 Degrees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible performance and cooling As intel have returned to solder I decided that I might stick with my old h100i and see how the thermals are moving from an i7-4790k to this, and I am shocked. I am running 5.0Ghz across all cores with lower temps than I did before. It has also boosted my fps in games to hit the 144Hz refresh rate of my monitor with my GTX1080 at 1440p, the biggest improvement was how Star Citizen is now playable with no fps drops or freezes. As a student games developer, it has also cut most of my renders and packages by an hour boosting productivity. 10/10

i9 9900k

will this work in my msi Z390 motherboard soket 1151 or do you have to update bios
Asked by: kingkev
Z390 is designed for 9th gen Intel CPUs. i think you would only need a bios update if you have a Z370 board as that was initially for 8th gen.

Compatibility to motherboard

Hi could I use the i9 9900k with my Asus ROG Strik Z270H S1151 motherboard? I know its not 9th gen but would it work until I can afford a new mobo as well?
Asked by: handy
No it won't work. The best CPU you can put in a Z270 board is the intel i7-7700K. You will need a Z370 or Z390 board to use the 9900K.
