Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the performance you might expect I purchased this card as part of a high performance workstation running Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations - these simulations use a lot of processing power and by speeding up disk access I was trying to get a hefty boost. Sadly, the expectation of 12GB/s speed never materialised and the report I provide below is the result of several weeks of tinkering and much technical support from Highpoint. There is no phone support but the tech support was managed by on line indecent software and Highpoint always responded within 24 hrs. First, the system spec: ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme with i9-9900X overclocked to 4.8GHz and fitted with 64GB of Vengance PC-3600 DDR4. Boot drive is the Samsung 2TB 970 EVO drive in the motherboard slot (CPIe lines and not via DMI) (I have not used the DIMM.2 riser card yet). I purchased 4 off Corsair 960GB Force 510 series NVMe drives to fill all the slots in the Highpoint 7101A card. The card uses 16 PCIe lanes. Before I describe the real world experience I must state that when using IOMeter test software with a script supplied by Highpoint I did get around 12GB/s read and write in a RAID 0 configuration. However, when using Windows 10 Pro to transfer large files (25GB virtual machine files) the best read/write performance I could get was 1.9GB/s (as observed in the Task Manager and with the file transfer progress window) with 4 cards in a RAID 5 configuration. With the 4 cards in a RAID 0 configuration I achieved bursts of 3.6GB/s. By contrast, I achieved 2.3GB/s reading and writing to the single Samsung 970EVO drive. PassMark performance test gave similar results. You might argue that this is not a fair test of the card - Windows will slow things down and of course, reading/writing from the RAID card will never be faster than the drive to which the files are being copied. I also ran some tests reading and writing files to the same RAID drive - these also ran at 1.9GB/s. It should also be noted that when running at 1.9GB/s, Task Manager did report the drive as being around 60% active suggesting a Windows bottle neck. On this basis, around 3.6GB might be achievable if Windows allowed the drive to run at 100%. If any one has any observations to make or suggestions to extract more speed I would be very grateful. I should like to know if Windows 10 Pro Workstation runs faster with the ReFS files system. So in summary, the real world use of the Highpoint card has provided me with a RAID 5 setup that runs at 1.9GB/s, roughly the same as a single NVMe card connected to PCIe lines (not via DMI interface chip). While I have the security of a RAID 5 setup I have gained no speed advantage, which is a pity because I only purchased the card for its speed. I have decided not to return the card as it has allowed me to add 4 x NVMe drives to the system. Finally, many may ask why I did not go for the ASUS solution. The main reason for not choosing this approach was the slow speed and high cost of the 'Intel Approved' SSD's (it will not run on non Intel approved memory) and the difficulty of getting a VROC key.

Will this work with other operating systems for example Unraid?

I'm looking to build a small ECC server with this adapter and 4 x NVME's in unraid.
