Chassis Airflow
Chassis Airflow
Date Issued: 20th Oct 2008

The modern PC is potentially a mass of heat output and heat production hot spots. With CPUs rated at more than 100W of heat output, single graphics boards carrying similar ratings (and people want to run two!), multiple hard drives the norm, lots of memory and mainboards covered in heatpipes to combat toasty core logic and PWM circuits, a PC appreciably warming up a room when it’s working hard is no joke.

Watercooling
Date Issued: 19th Jun 2008

Watercooling for the PC has been around for years in some form or another, for at least as long as Scan have been in business, with basic physics defining why you want to use it. That means for air cooling, to cope with increasing temperature in the heatsink you need to move the air across it faster. That is why thermostatically controlled fans in your PC will turn faster the hotter something gets.

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 21 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Solid Silent Quality Case This was the case of choice for a graphics workstation, for its' silent operation and robust quality. This case is heavy, and will take future upgrades for many years, The internal flexibility, allows for easy removal and re-arrangement of drive bays to facilitate low noise and low speed cooling. Cable management is easy, and SSD placement ample. Looks fantastic in an understated way, cost reflects the quality of design and build. 04 March 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Simply the best case I've ever used It's difficult to know where to begin, so I won't go into details. Look on YouTube and there are plenty Fractal Design Define R4 (and R5) case reviews/builds. I really cannot fault this case. The flexibility is enormous. The build fantastic. Cable management extremely well thought out. Sound deadening and quieting features work really well. And its price: how on earth do they do it at this price? It oozes quality at every turn, is a pleasure to build into, and its great value too. What more could you ask for? 15 December 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great case This is a great quality case - solid, cool and quiet. Very easy to work with too. 09 October 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very good, although had a small issue. I love this case. For normal use the noise is on par with my old Lian Li case (minus the annoying rattle and hum after 6 years). However when gaming the graphics card fan is dramatically reduced in volume making the entire experience even better. This case has a really HEAVY solid vibe, a serious quality product that does well to reduce noise. One negative point for the one I received, the threading on the left side panel's top screw area was not working. So I have had to remove the top screw. Everything else is perfect and since I have thrown out the old case I am not going to spend time dissecting my system again just to RMA my only case over one of the side panel screws not working. Even with the screw removed, the side panel is very secure and not going anywhere and there is no rattle or hum EVEN with that screw missing now. 29 September 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great case! Excellent case, very quiet and very nice to look at. 19 July 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Custom Build Case This is one of the easiest case's I've worked with, built a system for a friend who knows nothing about hardware...bit of a waste really. It is well thought out, well made and everything has been considered to make it a dream to put together. Only down side might be the size of it...it's a beast! but justifiable if you want your case to be uncluttered by cables and have the best airflow you could ask for. 05 May 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Clean simple case Does what you need, long graphics cards might be more of an issue but you can remove the drive trays. Does fit a double radiator for CPU cooling but you have to hack the mounting a little bit. Overall very satisfied and considering moving another machine to one of these cases. 05 March 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Fantastic case worth the money Huge upgrade from my old Zalman Z7, both price and quality wise. The case is a very sturdy, heavy build, with side wall panels padded with sound proofing material. There is an inch wide gap for cables behind mobo rack, leaving the 'main' compartment free of obstructions and allowing great air circulation. The design is very cool and case looks slick. The air filters can easily be removed and cleaned without taking down the case. One star down for quality as the panels don't quite fit the frame, causing gaps and slightly bent panel folds. No major concern, but for the money one would expect a little more quality. I bought the case with 3 extra fans. With default 2 that's 5x 140mm fans. Even at full speed though (regulated by a 3-way-switch neatly hidden behind front panel) the case is super quiet. With fans running at lowest speed the noise is almost unnoticeable. Due to huge fans and great air circulation, the temperatures have dropped by an average of 5 degrees, across CPU, MoBo, 4 HDDs and GFX. It's costly, but worth every penny. 16 November 2014

Answer:
Yes. I have just fitted it to a new build X99S system using the MSI X99S SLI Plus board housed in an R4 case. The top of the board is very close to the fans, and I therefore had to fit the fan to the radiator AFTER connecting the PSU to the CPU power socket on the board, but no issues other than that.

Answer:
I have built with both these items but never at the same time, the H100i is a fairly compact cooler , which I have fitted into an NZXT 340 , a much smaller case.
The R4 is sized for a top 240mm rad so this should be fine, but I have not actually combined the two.

Answer:
Not in my rig using the Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 motherboard. It sits far too high in the case and leaves less than an inch of height to the top. If you were to cut the top open so that the watercooler sits proud you would be okay.
I would recommend if you're spending the money to go with water, you might want to spend the money to go with a quality case. I really like the Source 210 Elite, though I don't have any information on if your radiator would fit in it or not.

Answer:
This case has a 240mm top slot available and the X60 is 280mm so the official answer is NO.
It is possible to remove the drive bays to free up a space on the front, but this may or may not be OK.
Your best bet is to get the Define S which will certainly fit this rad.

I do not know anything about that particular motherboard but what I want to share with you is, the space in this case is vast. Plus you can remove the upper drive tray for even more space. I highly doubt you would have any issues installing practically any consumer/prosumer/gamer motherboard.

Will the "be quiet! Shadow Rock SLIM" (LN55602) fit in this case properly? This is the case I plan on buying soon and eventually I would like to get a new cooler for the CPU to keep my current CPU cooler, better, while providing future proofing in case I can get an ugraded 125W CPU.
