Focusrite’s 3rd generation of their lauded ‘Scarlett’ series has collected hordes of adoring fans, and the ‘18i20’ is at the forefront of this range. The 18i20 is packs serious firepower into a super-affordable package. Dual Focusrite mic/instrument preamps are located on the 18i20’s front panel directly where you’d need them, whilst the rear panel is home to an abundance of extra I/O – up to 18-in/20-out simultaneously.
You’ll also find 6 further XLR combo inputs, alongside 8 channels of ADAT I/O, S/PDIF and MIDI I/O, and word clock out. Focusrite ensured the 18i20 had all the additional features one could need too, onboard talkback, 8-channel LED bar-graph meters, dual headphone outs and speaker switching for dual-monitor setups.
This, the 3rd gen Scarlett 18i20 takes the state-of-the-art USB audio interfaces to even greater heights with two newly designed and upgraded Scarlett mic preamps, high-performance 24-bit/192kHz AD/DA converters, enhanced preamp gain structure, incredibly low latency and instrument inputs capable of handling scorching hot pickups.

But it isn’t only the exterior that’s had an overhaul, the inside of the 18i20 has been upgraded too, to bring an overall greater sonic quality, lower latency than ever and a more streamlined operation. With a superb sample rate of 192kHz, you’ll enjoy studio-quality sound you can take anywhere.
The instrument inputs have also undergone an overhaul too and have been completely redesigned to ensure they’re capable of handling red-hot active pickups. Last but not least, Focusrite have included wired analogue protection circuitry across all of the 18i20’s I/O’s, meaning you can be safe in the knowledge your 18i20 is safe from any power surges.
Low-Latency Means Better Takes
perform betterIt's not secret musicians and engineers alike are more inclined to perform better and achieve better results when you’ve got a fantastic-sounding monitor mix, with everything you need to find that inspirational spark – eg a splash of reverb/delay on a guitar solo. Fortunately, the 18i20’s incredibly low-latency allows you to monitor with native plug-in effects in real time, meaning you can listen to your parts as they are in your mind, in real time, and thus record better takes.
This is the ideal scenario, however if you prefer to monitor your input direct with guaranteed low-latency, just engage the ‘Direct Monitor’ circuit. A pair of virtual loopback inputs allow you to record a stereo signal of any combination of hardware input and software playback channels, meaning podcasts and streaming are a piece of cake.
