dbx - '286S'
Microphone Pre-Amp Processor

dbx 286S Microphone Pre-Amp Processor

sonically pristine foreverThe dbx® 286s is a Channel Strip Processor packed with features that offers studio quality microphone/instrument preamplifier and four processors that can be used separately or in any combination. The sonically pristine dbx 286s Mic Preamp has all the features you need, such as wide-ranging input gain control, switchable +48V phantom power, and an 80Hz high-pass filter to eliminate low frequency hum, rumble or wind. The patented dbx OverEasy® compressor can be used to transparently smooth out uneven acoustic tracks or add that classic "in your face" vocal performance that only a dbx compressor is capable of.

Use the frequency tunable De-Esser to remove vocal sibilance and high frequency distortion from instruments like cymbals. Fine-tune the Enhancer HF Detail control to add clarity and detail to your tracks and adjust the LF Detail control to add fullness and depth to vocals and bass instruments whilst reducing the muddy low midrange frequencies. The separate threshold and ratio controls on the Expander/Gate allow you to subtly reduce headphone leakage or radically gate noisy guitar amps.

Amazing Features • Frequency tunable De-Esser reduces sibilance and high frequency distortion
• Enhancer increases the detail and definition of the high and low frequencies
• Classic dbx Compression puts great sound within easy reach
• Insert jack allows you to add an external processor
• Program adaptive Expander/Gate

Sound Your Best!

dbx 286S Microphone Pre-Amp Processor

Effective ProcessingThe dbx 286s is fully compliment of metering and status LEDs to visually guide you to getting the sound you need. The floating balanced XLR Mic Input accepts balanced or unbalanced inputs to connect easily to professional and home studio microphones. The additional 1/4" TRS Line Input can accept balanced/unbalanced signals to process live electronic instruments or pre-recorded tracks at mixdown.

Use the Insert jack to interface between the Mic Preamp and the signal processing sections to "loop out" to external processors, like an EQ or delay unit or alternatively mix the Mic Preamp's signal out to an external destination. The price and trouble of patching together multiple processors for use on one track can be irritating. The dbx 286s gives you all the mic processing you need in one box, with the shortest, clearest signal path so your music can continue to sound its best.

DBX 286S Microphone Pre-Amp/Channel Strip Processor Compresser/De-Esser/Limiter/Gate is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product: Good value. As an all in one mic preamp this is perfect if you just want to record one audio input. Eg Youtube video, podcast, vocal, piano etc. Set up once and forget. More head room than you would ever need and excellent fx, especially noise supression. It will record instruments but not at the same time as the voice. Only one stereo out put but you can double it with a Y cable. Eg https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B074H1B8B7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. For what it is designed to do (NOT multitrack recording) it is very good and the price (£135) is very reasonable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievably good for the price. I really can't fault this unit at all. My usage is for voiceover, and this accomplishes that task brilliantly. There is more gain than you'd ever need, and it's no noisier than a decent audio interface, and what noise there is the gate will remove anyway. Build quality is better than I expected, on a par with audio interfaces that cost 2-3 times the price (I know this isn't an audio interface, but I'm trying to quantify it against something you might have!). As another reviewer has mentioned, you need a light tough with the processing section. It's very heavy handed most of the time, and can degrade your signal very quickly if over-used. Again, for the price this is an absolute steal. There's nothing to touch it at anywhere near this price point. Probably worth noting that it comes with a two prong euro plug, so make sure you have a UK kettle lead or a converter!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, great service Using a few of these as mic pre' s and compressors in a broadcast studio. Haven't found any other product in a similar price range that performs as good and as reliable as the dbx.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprising features for the price A capable pre and filter. Easy to use, once you have it set up for your voice/studio. I use it for voice work and it performs well at quieter volumes. This means you don't need to constantly be adjusting the gain as you move from a quiet to loud performance. This feature alone saves lots of time in the post edit because all of your audio is normalised. As with any setting, physical or digital, don't push the settings too far and you will get some very professional results from this kit. The onboard deesser is great, but again it needs tailoring to your voice to be efficient. It might not catch everything, but if you have a sibilant voice, it's a total godsend. The Enhancer is a simple 2 band EQ/Exciter. Again, don't be too heavy handed with the settings but this will clear up a deep rich voice and even out a high pitched one too. Personally I get best results with the HF set to around 6 as I have a deep voic. This may be a little too high for most, but it adds detail that would normaly be lost in my voice. Yes a full EQ suite would be better but seeing as you would be EQing in post, you'll just save some time fixing some issues at source. Expander gate (noise reduction) As with all the settings, be gentle. Unless you work in a fully treated studio, you will always have some noise to deal with. Even if it's a slight clothing noise or poor mic etiquette. A gentle boost of these settings will help in the long term. My tip would be to keep the ratio at minimum and increase the threshold untill you start to affect the sound you want to eliminate and then raise the ratio up a couple of clicks to eliminate it. Your results may vary because every studio and performance requirement is different. Generally a very well featured mic pre. Possibly the best mic pre I have found sub £3000 studio gear.
