Black Lion - Bluey

1-channel FET Limiting AmplifierVeteran engineers are all too familiar with the concept of ‘happy accident’s – those all too rare moments of magic which spark the magic in your projects and recordings. They can’t be planned, they’re organic and happen spontaneously. The guitarist might be stuck in the wrong key, the wrong track patched somewhere it shouldn’t be etc. These very same moments of magic can sometimes occur with gear, the gear gods smiling down on a piece of rare vintage gear.
The shortage of original parts sometimes forces engineers to deviate from the original plans, unwittingly spawning a one-off mod which sounds incredible! One such example of this would be lauded mix engineer Chris Lord-Alge’s prized 1176, affectionately referred to by Chris himself as ‘Bluey’. Chris desired more channels of this one-off limiter and thus reached out the modification wizards at Black Lion Audio. The end result was so spectacular that they decided it was too good not to share with the world! Meet ‘Bluey’!

The 'X-Factor'

the cream of the cropWith his incredible ears, years upon years of experience at the top level and a cache of coveted vintage gear, world-renowned engineer Chris Lord-Alge was quick to identify one of his four Blue Stripe revision 1176 limiters as being the cream of the crop.
Inspired heavily by the faceplate aesthetics featuring a section of blue paint around the VU meter, 1176 revisions A, A/B and B are each referred to as ‘Blue Stripe’ units. This particular unit, lovingly dubbed ‘Bluey’, has the special ‘x-factor’ which makes vocal tracks sparkle like no other processor out there!
Re-Creation of The Beast

Intrigued by Chris’s effusive praise of Bluey, Black Lion head design engineer Jesus Ortiz and modification tech Preston Whiting took a flight from O'Hare to LAX to find out what gave this Blue Stripe its edge. What their diagnosis uncovered was a series of modifications done to the unit over the years to keep it working that miraculously created a monster 1176.
BLA analyzed the unit in meticulous detail, and has, in cooperation with Mr. Lord-Alge, re-created the beast — now available to everyone as the Black Lion Audio Bluey.
