Gaming on PCs used to be restricted to desktop computers equipped with a dedicated graphics card connected to a display, much in the same way that a games console works with a TV. Recent advances in technology have enabled manufacturers to equip laptops with increasing levels of graphics power without them being too bulky or heavy.

ASUS ROG XG Station 2 Thunderbolt3 External Graphics Dock, With 600w 80 Plus Gold PSU, GbE, USB 3.0, ROG Aura Support is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does what it says on the tin. Couple of minor gripes though. Bought this to boost the gaming performance of my Skull Canyon NUC. Paired it with an RX480 GPU. Pros: * Very easy to set up. Plug it in, authorise it via the Thunderbolt software and install the drivers just as you would with any other graphics card. Simple. * Even only using a 20gbps Thunderbolt cable, performance with the RX480 is about on par with what I'd expect from a traditional setup. If you were to benchmark it with synthetics against an equivalent desktop machine, you'd probably see a bit of a performance hit, but it's not enough for me to notice during gameplay so I'm happy enough. Knocks the socks off the IGPU on the NUC in any case. * The design may be a bit Marmite, but personally I quite like it. It fits in well on my desk, and there's plenty of RGB lighting too if that's your thing. * The extra connectivity on the rear panel is a nice touch. I haven't tested the Gigabit LAN port, but the additional USB ports are very useful. Cons: * For some reason, the power button is inside the chassis. That means you have to open it up every time you want to turn it on or off. Not sure why this couldn't be done via firmware whenever the host PC is powered up/down... * The included cables are ridiculously short. I had to buy longer USB-B and Thunderbolt 3 cables, which means I'm running at a reduced bandwidth of 20gbps instead of 40gbps. This doesn't seem to have much of an effect on performance, thankfully. * It can get quite loud under full load, and even at idle there's a noticeable hum (although to be fair I do have it sitting directly in front of me on my desk, YMMV if you place it somewhere else). * For what it is, it's a bit expensive. This is to be expected for a niche product, though. As competing TB3 docks start to appear, the price might come down a bit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Expensive, but does it's job well. Check Compatability. The ROG Station has performed brilliantly so far. I've done no benchmarking, but I bought it (along with a GTX1060) in order to power a VR setup, and it hasn't let me down yet. Couple of gripes though. 1: I couldn't get it to work with my ASUS UX501V Zenbook. Despite spending an evening messing with drivers and upgrading my Thunderbolt firmware, I couldn't get them to talk. I should have checked compatibility properly first but I foolishly assumed it would be okay as the Zenbook is listed on the ROG site, but the specific model list is 'to be updated'. For different reasons ended up buying a new PC, and went with an Intel NUC, which I knew was compatible. 2: I don't know if I'm missing something, as this seems like a ridiculous problem which I haven't seen anybody else mention, but the start button for the unit is INSIDE the case! Meaning that in order to switch the station on you have to open it up and reach inside to the power button which is mounted on the main board!! - every time! it's very inconvenient, and I can't fathom the reason for this design decision. I was hoping it may have some sort of auto-wake feature when connected to the PC, but unless i'm missing some software (which isn't impossible) it has to be started manually. All in all, very expensive (although there seems to be very little choice in alternatives). But does what it is supposed to very well, and provides lots of extra connectivity (like a docking station) The launch switch issue is very strange and you need to make sure it's compatible with your pc.

Is this compatible with the Asus ROG GL702VT Laptop?

I know my laptop has thunberbolt 3, but was wondering if it's compatible - The Asus website seems to suggest it isn't as they only list 3 compatible laptops from their ROG series ROG G701VI ROG GL502VM ROG GL702VM Are these really the only laptops within the ROG serious it's compatible with?
Asked by: crazymoose
Actually, these things will work with most thunderbolt3 laptops and Nucs, however, the software isn't always easy to install, and the support for things like connecting and disconnecting isn't always seamless. For example if you disconnect the GPU through the nvidia application, it actually disables the card in the device manager, and you can only re-enable it via the device manager, because the Nvidia software won't load because there is no GPU! When it does work, it works quite nicely, but I'd just go for something different, like the Akitio Node, or any other eGPU thing which puts the on off button on the outside...
