Reviews
Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic Board - Easy Setup, Highly Recommended I've built about 20 PCs now for myself and clients, I would regard myself as competent rather than an expert. Purchased the ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero for a new build build for a client as the base for a new Skylake system intended for video editing & gaming. The board layout is excellent, even with large GPUs like the 980Ti on it. Everything is still accessible - TIP...if you have a large graphics card it's much easier to connect the SATA cables to the board first - if the card is long it may "cover" the SATA ports as far as getting your fingers in there is concerned, but there is plenty of clearance once they are in. The BIOS is awesome - for beginners to overclocking the bios can basically do everything for you to make a stable, fast system automatically. If you want to get really into it then you can modify just about everything - and there is plenty of information, tutorials and support available. The board itself is solid, feels sturdy and gives you confidence when slotting in the RAM for example - and four slots means that you can put a LOT of lovely fast DDR4 RAM onto it. My only criticism is that with the Corsair H110GTX and the Corsair RMi850 PSU taking up one USB 2.0 header each for Corsair Link - there is no spare header for the front panel USBs. There is an easy solution however - LN32881 gives you all the headers you need. A really easy build, easy setup - this board will go as far as you want...and looks cool doing it too! I highly recommend it, very glad I chose this on the advice of the staff from Scan for this build/budget. It's been in constant use for two weeks now since the build and no problems whatsoever. 17 April 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Must be the best motherboard I've ever had Am using this Motherboard witha Skylake i7-6700k processor and 32Gb Corsair memory with a SSd hard drive installed. It's so easy to tweak the setting and make it fly through any program I'm using. 12 April 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Good Great MB, a lot of useful software and perfect look. 18 February 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic Motherboard I just can't fault it. Looks great, well built, and the UEFI is very intuitive. The bundled software is equally good. Overclocking is also pretty easy. There are plenty of connections too which will allow for further expandability in the future. I can't see anything bad to say about it so far! 09 February 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent bit of kit! I upgraded my gaming rig a couple of months ago and decided on this board given the great reviews. As soon as I took it out of the box, it felt like a solid and well-made board. It even smelled of quality! To be honest, there's not a heap to say about a motherboard really but what I can say is the build quality is top notch, building with it was easy and fun, the features this board has are fantastic and the software bundled with it is brilliant! As usual, Asus have put out an amazing product. 31 January 2016
Rated 2 out of 5 by Works But has very very bad problems. Once you're in Windows this board is very good. Getting to windows is a struggle. First off When in the BIOS It will freeze randomly(yes the BIOS will actually freeze), then when booting into windows it will bluescreen with memory memory_management, irql_not_less_or_equal and even some others, I have re installed windows and ran memtest86 and it comes back clean.. Very bad experience with this board. beware. 31 January 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Performance motherboard, disappointing raid Do not buy this motherboard if you want to use an M2 card and raid. As soon as you enable raid support the M2 slot is disabled. Documentation says Sata 1 and 2 ports are used by M.2, but in reality, set the sata to raid rather than ahci and the m2 slot disappears. Not good if this is your OS drive. Turn raid off and m2 slot is available again. This occurs with even two drives in any sata slot. Turns out theres info on the ROG forums with several people reporting this and Support claiming it's a bug. Trying to run with Skylake 6700K 4.0ghz, 32Gb ram, Samsung evo 950 M2 and 4 x WD black 4Tb drives in a raid set. Going to have to buy a raid card to support this config. Other than that setup is very fast - after bios load finishes it boots into Windows 10 in 3 secs. 13 January 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by great motherboard I purchased this with an i7 6700k and this motherboard is excellent, really easy to setup and the fan control is great I can hardly hear my pc(corsair carbide air 540) now and all the temps are still really low even whilst I am gaming. the header for the water pump is a great feature 08 January 2016

Is this motherboard compatible with the M.2 NVMe drive below?

The Asus website does not make it clear that it supports NVMe via the native M.2 socket.
TIA.

Answer:
Yes it supports NVMe SSD's. I was curious about the same thing myself and a quick google later I found that NVMe compatability is native on the Z170 chipset.

Answer:
I own Maxuimus VIII hero. I'm using Samsung 950 Pro 512 GB NVMe as a boot drive on M.2 socked yes it does work. M.2 can work on that board in sata or pci express mode from what I read it supports other NVMe solution PCIx cards as boot or data. I'm getting in CrystalDiskMark on my 950 pro mentioned about 2,450MB/s read and 1,500MB/s write running windows 10 64 bit.

Answer:
rasul972 i7 6700 K is an unlocked cpu which you can overclock easy and yes it can be watercooled. Good start AIO solution in my opinion would be Corsair H110i GTX Hydro Cooler if you're going to OC and if you can mount 280 radiator (2 x 140 fans) you can get h100i GTX 240 (2 x 120) if you can't get the other one in your case. Both mentioned are compatible with 1151 socket :D Fittings are included so all you have to do is install it. Block that sits on cpu have thermal compound already applied so all good to go out of the box :D

It doesn't come with bluetooth built in as standard or wifi. Both of those can easily be added using expansion cards though so don't let that put you off getting one of these epic motherboards.

You will not be disappointed.

Answer:
rasul972 there is not Bluetooth or WIFI however low profile Bluetooth dongles 4.0 are available for about £7 in my case I rather choose my wifi instead of getting one included in the bundle internal or external. I personally use Netgear A6200 which is about £23 (works on Windows 10 and previous versions) that's additional £30 in total to get features you require if you consider purchasing Maximus VIII Hero. Motherboard itself is great quality, features and value I'm very pleased with mine. Kind Regards

Boot to BIOS, why?

For some reason, after upgrading this board and to an i5-6600k chip, my PC constantly boots into BIOS. I have to power it down, then power it back up (while in BIOS) to get the windows boot.

It's not giving me any errors and google cant seem to help me. I've changed the Sata cable and Sata Port on the board. The last thing im thinking of doing is changing the boot drive?

Any ideas?
