650W Seasonic X-Series, 80 PLUS Gold, Full Modular, SLI/CrossFire, Single (1) Rail, 54A +12V, 1x120mm Fan, PSU is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Silent psu in hybrid mode even with fairly high end system I bought this psu to replace an Enermax Revolution 1,250W which was getting a bit too noisy. I no longer use sli so don’t need a psu that powerful now. After research I found that 650w should be ample. My system is watercooled so is very quiet and I wanted a silent psu if possible. I discussed a suitable choice with one of Scan’s technical staff and he suggested Seasonic or the Corsair AX range (which are built by Seasonic) as they can be switched so the fan only spins up once a certain load or temperature has been reached. This Seasonic model has a single 12v rail design with the subsidiary 3.3v, 5v etc rails powered from it. I was worried about coil whine but Scan had experienced no returns of this model for that. I’ve had the psu for a few days now and can confirm there is no coil whine. The top of the range Sanyo Denki fan is slightly noisier than expected but not bad. However I am running in hybrid mode which as mentioned above means the fan only comes on at higher loads. You can set it so the fan is always on but I don’t see why anyone would want this. So far the fan has never come on in hybrid mode. I stressed my system to the full by running the Prime 95 cpu torture test and the Heaven graphics card benchmark simultaneously and still the fan didn’t come on. No game will ever work both the gpu and cpu this hard. My system specs for powered items: Intel Core i5 2500k cpu at 4.5Ghz Nvidia GTX770 graphics card overclocked to 1,280Mhz core, 8GHz VRAM 8GB Corsair Dominator LP 1600Mhz Asus Maximus V Gene m-ATX motherboard Samsung 830 256GB SSD Samsung 2TB 5,400rpm HDD Laing D5 Vario waterpump (on setting 3) 4x Blacksilent Noiseblocker 140mm radiator fans 1x Silverstone 120mm case fan 1x Silverstone Air Penetrator 180mm case fan Mouse, keyboard, Logitech G13 gamepad, USB headphone DAC I should also mention the psu intake draws air direct from outside the case so does not suffer from hot case air turning it into a hotbox. I don’t have the tools to measure the power draw but with both cpu and gpu at 100% in the above stress test it must be close to 400W – and still the fan doesn’t come on. The end result is I now have a very efficient, stable and silent psu. In addition in most games it should run at around half its maximum power which is where it is most efficient. The only slight quibble I have is that the SATA leads are a bit short but my case is an unusual design (Silverstone Fortress FT-02) so I doubt this will affect most people. All cables other than the 24 pin ATX are the nice flat black variety which I like. I would advise anyone with a single high end graphics card and overclocked cpu to buy this psu. For peace of mind it even has a seven year warranty. P.s. I’ve now replaced the Air Penetrator case fan with a quieter Phobya G-Silent 18 fan as it was the one remaining audible component. The entire system is now very close to silent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exellent Had over a month now, don't think the fan has been on once in Hybrid mode and if it has I didn't hear it. Totally silent operation. Becuase it's fully modular can upgrade to braided colour cables for extra modding.

Questions & Answers

Does this PSU include all flat black cables?

Asked by: Dafydd
Hi I think I answered this incorrectly before. The cables are all flat black ribbon style cables except the main 24 pin ATX cable with is black sleeved but round (conventional style). Hope this helps (Brilliant silent PSU by the way - runs an overclocked i7 4790k and GTX 780Ti no problem).)
