Rated 5 out of 5 by Top tier PSU! I'd like to start off saying I built an Athlon AMD FM2+ system back in 2013 which had a CX 500w bronze installed with it. Then in October of 2014 I upgraded to a Haswell i5 system (I actually got the MOBO and CPU off Scan too) then in early 2015 I installed an MSI GTX 970 4GB which is amazing but after a few months my CX 500w bronze started to make clunky noise when running so I decided it was unsafe to use any more (I knew I would have to replace in about 1-2year of having it). So I began searching online for a new PSU using forums and I found many people who gave me lots of good advice about different tiers of PSU and what I should be looking for. So I decided to get the EVGA SuperNova G2 550w Gold PSU. When I received it took me a bit to figure out I had to stick the big ATX cable that was split into two cables into the PSU and then the big large cable at the end into the MOBO. It powered up like a dream and I had the power saving mode clicked on which is a little switch on the PSU that disables the fan till the PSU requires cooling so basically when using the pc for general browsing and Hearthstone with Spotify music on the pc is super quiet. It only kicks the fan in after a few minutes of me playing a big demanding game and when the GPU requires more power. Now the main thing I really want to bring up is that one day while I was playing Fallout 4 my computer 'click' off instantly and I was puzzled so I began to trouble-shoot my parts and they all checked out fine. So I turned on the pc and I got a message from the PSU saying it had stopped a surge safely which surprised me and I was very thankful for. I found out it was my extension lead that was the cause so I replaced it. If I had the CX 500 in at that time It could of damaged a major component of my PC. That's why you buy a decent PSU to avoid these things. I hope this review helped anyone looking into this item. Regards 27 April 2016

Answer: 
The answer is a "yes, but..."

An i5 clocked at about 4.2 Ghz together with a 980 with a mild overclock will run at ~350-400W, which is just the upper end of the efficiency and heat/noise sweet spot for a 550W PSU.

Once you add additional components (more fans, water pump if you use water cooling, high RPM HDDs, going for a high overclock), it's going to push the PSU to a less efficient, noisier and hotter level.

Going to 650W or 750W will give you a much better safety margin.
