4TB WD Red WD40EFRX, 3.5" NAS HDD, SATA III - 6Gb/s, 5400rpm, 64MB Cache, NCQ is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from NAS OEM Drive works well once initialised Ordered two drives. These are OEM drives i.e., not boxed retail. One worked and one failed to intialise. Luck of the draw I suppose. All drives have a failure rate out of the "box" as well as after a period of use. WD drives are generally of good quality and rank fairly well amongst other manufactures. Scan quickly offered support and refunded the returned drive. The working drive is very quiet and runs 24/7 in the NAS. With a NAS always have a spare drive handy and back up using a RAID set up. It would be rare for two drives to fail at the same time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Drives failing in less than 3 years and "interesting" WD support I have 5 of these drives, 2 in a QNAP TS-451 for a little under 3 years (RAID 1) and a second pair added about 3 months ago. One of the original drives started showing SMART errors so I bought #5 to swap it out. The second of the original pair has also now started showing SMART errors. WD tech support have been good, asked me to low level format the drive and run their extended test which showed no hard errors but several warranty flags, so they agreed to replace it under the 3-year warranty. Replacement reconditioned drive showed SMART errors before installation when checked in a USB caddy. Again told to low level format and run extended test which resulted in a hard sector fault – dead drive. Still in discussions with WD. On the positive side they are trying to honour their warranty but on the negative, what is wrong with their rework system that they ship a drive with recorded warranty errors?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top notch NAS HDD I wanted to expand my NAS storage for multimedia purposes. Paired with Synology 218 i run 4k UHD HDR videos in my network without breaking a sweat. Raid 0 as i need more space not security of the files. I am happy with the result.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Working fine so far What can I say they (2) arrived promptly, well packaged, and are still working three weeks later.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nas drive does what it says I bought this to bump up my storage in a Synology nas box. I had 3 or these 4TB drives already that have performed superbly for the last 3 or 4 years. I bought them because my NAS box told me the 2 3tb Seagate drives I had in it at the time had failed. There wasn't actually anything wrong with the drives (that I know of), and I have been using them ever since for other purposes without problems, but at the time I lost everything on them. Netgear wanted to charge me about a grand to recover the drives - so sod that, and after about 2 weeks of trying to hit on the right data recovery solution and I got everything back, but I went with some new WD RED drives for the rebuild. I stuck with the Netgear NAS as I couldn't afford to replace it, which worried me - but I haven't had a single problem with it on the WD RED drives for 3-4 years now. Now I got a new nas, and wanted to expand the storage - so decided to stick with the winning formula and bought another 4TB WD RED. Hard to write a hd review as out the box it really should just work, but my other 3 have performed flawlessly so it feels fair to comment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WD do once again what they do best If you have a NAS box that needs populating , these drives are excellent . They are pretty quick, and offer huge storage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good I can't really fault these drives just yet although the review takes place in the early days of the life of a recent NAS build for which the WD Reds were purchased. Come back in 5 years and I'll give you a realtime verdict. I'm hoping that the WDs are more durable than recent generations of Seagate drives, both SAS and SATA, none of which have gone the distance. The failure rate of Seagates in comparison with WD or Samsung HDs has been astonishing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal for NAS I fitted two of these drives into my Qnap TS-219 P+ six weeks ago. They are working quietly and faultlessly. They replace two Samsung HD204UI drives which were not as quiet and one of which would from time to time disconnect. from the Qnap. I use them to backup images of my my PC HDD each day using Norton Ghost 15.0.. A weekly master followed by six daily increments. A total of around 296 GB/week.
