Product Overview

All Good Things Come in Fours

External hard drives are the latest trend. And rightly so, because they can always be transported and connected to another device. The ICY BOX 3640SU3 offers enough space, thanks to the fact that up to four hard disks of any size can be operated simultaneously. The robust enclosure made of aluminum not only looks cool, but directs the produced heat efficiently from within the enclosure to the outside. In addition, the cooling is further enhanced by a temperature-controlled fan, which quietly ensures proper air circulation.

The installation of hard drives into the IB-3662U3 is done without any tools. Thanks to the modern EasySwap® technology , they can be replaced quickly at any time. We did not forget the environment either - The ICY BOX has a sleep mode that reduces power consumption to a minimum.

All the versions of Windows from XP and Mac OS X are supported. The connection is done selectively either via a fast USB 3.0, with which the transfer rates of up to 5 Gb per second can be achieved, or eSATA. Each disk is then displayed as an individual drive (JBOD = "Just a Bunch of Disks").

No More "Double Trouble"

In case two HDDs are not enough: In this wonderful JBOD (=Just a bunch of disks) enclosure, four 3.5" HDDs can be mounted. Without using any screws, the HDD can be mounted and replaced. Even while in operation.

The Smart Fan

The fan has a quick reaction when the temperature changes inside the enclosure. This way, your important data is constantly protected against heat. In case you would like to set it manually, you can still set it on one of the three available fan persets.

For the Environment

If the host cable (USB 3.0 or eSATA) is not connected, or when the device is not being used it turns itself into Standby mode automatically. In addition, each HDD has an LED indicator in order to provide information regarding HDD activity (read/write), fan settings and connection.

Features
• Silent operation by thermal controlled fan
• Energy saving by supporting sleep modus
• Easy assembling by trayless design
• HDD capacity unlimited
• Supports: Windows XP/Vista/Win7, MAC OS X
• Plug&Play and Hot Swap
• Please note that a port multiplier is required for correct E-SATA functionality

You've probably read the USB Tekspek, and perhaps your intrigue, or product interest, has lead you to look up Firewire as well. The two are similar in some respects, particularly some of the products that use the two technologies. However, Firewire has its differences, which means it has both benefits and drawback when compared to USB. This Tekspek will look at Firewire and also look at it with respect to USB.

ICY BOX IB-3640 External JBOD system for 3.5" SATA HDDs with USB 3.0 & eSATA Host is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ridiculously easy to setup I'm quite familiar with Raidsonic/Icy Box products having used a number of them over the years and this is up to their usual high quality of build. Setup was a cinch with the four disks being detected immediately on the Raspberry Pi 4. This will see use as a network backup server and I took note of the reviews highlighting the poor cooling due to the solid front door on the unit. It appears as though Icy Box have listened to these complaints because instead of a solid door the unit I received the door has been replaced with one that has a series of louvres on the bottom of the door to allow cool air to be drawn into the unit.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good for cooking drives If you have heavy disk usage then keep that door open, remove it or drill holes in it. Take the fan off of auto and set it to high. The unit has very poor ventilation. Look at it - there's a solid door on the front with no vents. Seriously, don't ignore this review. Save yourself the cost of replacing your hard-drives because it absolutely will destroy them through over-heating if you're not careful. Both FreeNAS and Linux detected the drives fine over USB.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, well priced. Bought to replace older dated unit. Moved 3 hd's into unit no problem. Found them straight away. Put a brand new 3tb drive in but would not recognise. Took all drives out tried it on its own still not recognised. Put drive into portable case, formatted it and then put it back in unit ok, found straight away. Appears to have problem with unformatted drives. Other than that works great. I use it as a straight hot swap unit, not as a raid array and am very happy with my purchase. Will buy again when need arises.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had To Read The Other Reviews To Get It Working Not the easiest to get set up but after reading all the previous helpful reviews, I did manage eventually to get it working. Bought the jbod version to use as a backup to my NAS, it certainly does what it says on the tin. Once the problems were sorted, my PC picked it up straight the way. Could not figure out why my Dell Inspiron Laptop wouldn't pick it up. After reading online, I updated all the available updated drivers for my Laptop from the Dell Website and Bingo, I was up and running. Great device for what I need and is only turned on when I need to back something up. Lack of a detailed Instruction Manual shouldn't cause a problem if you read the reviews on here and Amazon if you encounter problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed Having just replaced a Mac Pro with an iMac I needed a cheap method of accessing the four hard drives from the old Mac Pro until I decide my storage strategy for the future. From the description and comments on the Scan web site the Icy Box seemed ideal and so it proved. Reasonably priced, easy to set up if you take notice of the comments, reasonable build quality and a small footprint. Worked first time and no problems since.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Think it's money well spent but Manual... What manual? I bought this on the basis that I had a load of old sata discs dotted around which had accumulated as capacities grew and older ones got swapped out, I have a couple of external usb drive caddies that you can insert the bare discs into for access but call me finicky I just did not like the idea of moving bare discs around with exposed circuitboards etc... so got this enclosure to hold them. I've got a number of NAS devices at home but just wanted a just big old disc enclosure. The basics - The drives don't have to be the same capacity or make The enclosure will work on USB 1, 2 and 3 just at relevant transfer speeds You choose if you want to use the e-Sata interface by toggling the relevant button which is labelled Sync, where the enclosure goes to sleep when you turn off the pc/laptop/kit that the enclosure is hooked up to, is controlled by a button and is toggled on or off by pushing the sync button Cooling - yes there is a fan and yes it works - you can rely on the enclosure autosensing temp and fan requirements or by manually setting the fan speed between speed 1 (relatively quiet) to 2 to 3(noticeable) by pushing in turn the fan button. The quirks!! Who thought that a solid front door was a good idea! The fan sucking air out of an enclosure for four hard drives that has no holes might look nice and clean on a design flipchart picture but in reality if could be so much better - how about using the metal grates that are used on the icybox single HD enclosures like IB-550StU3S down the sides and front that's not too much of a stretch - it's not like they don't have access to the materials. I'll probably end up getting out the dremel and doing it myself (but I should not have to) The box seems to be quite partial as to how the drives are inserted, once they are in and recognised it works fine but when you are first setting it up if one of the drives does not appear start over and insert them one at a time powering off and on between insertions - don't immediately assume the box is faulty - just adapt your approach and it will work. (I have a Seagate 750gb, Samsung 500gb, 1tb and 750gb in mine) But it's up and running and doing what I wanted it to do - so far so good. It's lack of a manual means you have to work some aspects out - but you have a brain right? and it's all fairly logical once you engage it..... ;-) Hope this helps you in your deliberations - but that front door - maybe someone living in the Antarctic designed it.....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful box. Beware the manual. Small, simple, convenient, significantly cheaper than multiple single disc enclosures. Beware the dreadful manual and be patient when setting it up. Icy Box supply this enclosure in capacities of 2, 4 and 8 discs, and for each capacity they supply both JBOD and RAID versions. I bought the 4-bay JBOD version for use in a SoHo system where it acts as the container for the backup discs, replacing four single-disc enclosures. The box is smaller than I expected, and it is neat, fairly simple and convenient. The onboard port multiplier means that I only need a single cable (eSATA or USB3) to make each disc separately visible to the host PC. I prefer eSATA for technical reasons, but it is now quite rare, so having USB3 available as well is very useful. Icy Box supply handles which you attach to the discs in order to insert and remove them - these handles don't work particularly well, but unless you expect to change discs frequently, this is no big deal. In operation the box has performed very well and without any dramas. I haven't measured the performance but it seems to me to be quite reasonable. I deplore companies which fail to provide adequate and appropriate documentation for their products. Why ? Firstly, because it suggests they don't care about what they are selling; secondly, because each and every customer has to expend a lot of energy and waste a lot of time figuring out how to make their shiny new box work correctly. In order to avoid stress and the concomitant bad language, you should be aware of the following : 1) The power button works instantaneously when you turn on the power, but to turn the box off you have to press and hold the button for about 4 seconds; with all the other front panel buttons, you must press and hold them for about 4 seconds before they function. I think this makes good sense because it avoids accidental operation of the controls, but a brief note in the manual would prevent many people from thinking that their box is broken. 2) The layout of the front panel could hardly be more misleading because it very easy to associate lights and buttons incorrectly. 3) On the front panel there are a SYNC button and a SYNC light which are not mentioned anywhere in the manual. When you operate the SYNC button, the light cycles round off, amber and blue. The idea is that when SYNC is active the box switches itself on and off in sync with the host - I believe this occurs when the light is amber. The factory default setting meant that each time I turned the box on, it switched itself off after about two seconds.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good, but not perfect The box is sturdily made, with some strong fans inside to keep the drives cool. The 2 different connections (USB and eSATA) work without trouble and I've got it running with the drives in both RAID 1 and JBOD (my drives are different sizes so the spaces leftover after setting up RAID 1 are in JBOD). Despite this weirdness it has run flawlessly. The slight negatives are: -It is a bit fiddley to get the drives into position as you can't guide them inside and the guide-rails don't really guilde them. I was left uncertain if the connection had been made at the back. -For some strange reason the status lights on the front don't line up with related buttons (e.g. the light for eSata or USB doesn't tie up with the button that toggles the connection type). It had me initially a bit confused as the lettering on the buttons and status lights is very small and rather dark. -The eSATA cable doesn't hold very tightly and I've twice pulled it loose whilst moving the box. The second time was a very slight movement as it was a bit squint and that was enough for the cable to pop out.

I bought this unit - but it does switch off very quickly after only a short time and then you need to press the on button to wake it up

Are there some power management settings ?
Asked by: smartibs
There's no manual to help but other users have discovered that the "sync" button has nothing to do with committing buffered writes to disk and instead actually syncs the power status with the device it's plugged in to. I believe you want to long-press the sync button until the sync light turns amber.

does this show the hard drives as multiple drives or just one when connected

Asked by: blade1972
It shows as multiple drives. It's a JBOD (just a bunch of drives) enclosure and doesn't do any RAID itself.

Is it possible to use the USB3 and eSata connections at the same time?

I want to have a Raspberry Pi attached via usb to act as a NAS drive (Open Media Vault) while also having it plugged into my desktop computer (Linux). If not, are there similar products which would allow both connections simultaneously?
Asked by: VideoEditorA
Such a setup isn't possible (or advisable) as the disks need to belong to only a single host computer or the systems would keep overwriting each other's data and corrupt everything. If you create a NAS device however, then you can access it from your Linux system via NFS as a shared drive. This is reasonably lightweight, but you'll want to make sure you have a good network connection between the desktop and NAS (gigabit, preferably) so accessing over the network doesn't slow you down too much. Alternatively you could connect the disks directly to your Linux desktop and simply setup storage sharing or other features on that. Most NAS devices are just stripped back Linux computers anyway, so you can install just about anything onto a Linux desktop that you might find on a NAS.
