Rated 5 out of 5 by Replacement drive for a Lenovo G580 It was physically a direct swap. I had to use a partition utility to match its partitions to the original backup DVD set I made at purchase time. I am able to use the drives full capacity. Works perfectly. 19 April 2015

500GB Formatted Capacity Per Disc

What does this actually mean? Is half the capacity of the drive wasted? Or can I make two 500GB partitions on one drive?

Answer:
When you install Windows onto your computer like Win 7, you have the option of putting a partition on the drive. You can make a 1TB drive into 2 X 500 Gig. I never like to partition drives as most people have no idea they have another 500 Gig. Some people use the other 500 Gig to backup documents to it, but if the C: drive fails due to hardware issue, then getting data back from the other 500 Gig partition (D:) could be impossible.

I hope this helps ;-)

Answer:
These drives have two platters, each a notional 500GB. You can make as many partitions as you want. The advantage of high capacity platters (500GB is pretty high for a laptop drive) is they have high areal density which reduces seek times.

Formatted capacity is a different concept. A 1TB drive should have 1,000 GB except it doesn't. This goes back to decimal v binary systems as there are 1,024 bytes in a megabyte not 1,000 as a decimal system assumes. The true size of drives in GB as recognised by the operating system is about 7% smaller. This 1TB drive is in reality about 931GB. The formatted size of SSDs is smaller still as they normally have to set aside some volume for overprovisioning. This doesn't apply to hard drives.

To summarise this 1TB drive has a capacity of 931GB which you can leave as a single partition (which most do) or subdivide into as many partitions as your software will allow.

Hope this helps

Answer:
Further to my answer above I need to correct a mistake - the binary system has 1,024 bytes in a kilobyte not a megabyte as I said (then 1,024 kilobytes in a megabyte and 1,024 megabytes in a gigabyte which is where the 7% difference comes from).

Answer:
With any drive a portion of the disk space will be set aside for system use and therefore not be available for the user. If you wanted to reserve two partitions you should refer to the available capacity when deciding how much space to allocate to multiple partitions.

Answer:
No, what it is referring to is the individual platters in the drive. This drive is made up of two 500GB platters equaling 1TB in total. Once Formatted you should have one partition of roughly 931GB

Answer:
Yes you can still use the full drive capacity creating 2 x 500 GB segments approx (470GB) after formatting and allowing for a small amount of capacity required for system approx 100meg Windows OS.
