The QNAP TL-R1200PES-RP is a 12-bay, 2U short-depth rackmount JBOD storage enclosure designed to expand the storage capacity of a compatible QNAP NAS, including QuTS hero and QTS systems. It is not a standalone NAS and does not provide NAS services or management on its own; instead, it relies on a host NAS to manage storage volumes, RAID configurations, and data access. The TL-R1200PES-RP allows organisations to scale their NAS storage easily with large-capacity SATA hard drives or SSDs, making it ideal for applications such as virtualisation, surveillance, multimedia production, and Big Data archiving.
Massive Storage Capacity
By daisy-chaining up to twelve TL-R1200PES-RP enclosures, businesses can achieve total storage capacities of up to 2.0 PB, supporting up to 144 drives across multiple expansion units. Each enclosure supports 3.5-inch SATA hard drives and 2.5-inch SATA SSDs at 6 Gb/s or 3 Gb/s, though only one disk type can be used per RAID group. This flexible configuration enables seamless expansion of existing NAS storage pools without requiring RAID re-building or complex setup.
High-Speed Connectivity
The TL-R1200PES-RP connects to the host NAS via PCIe Gen 3 x8 using dual SFF-8644 1x2 interfaces, delivering up to 64 Gb/s of potential data throughput. Actual transfer speeds depend on the NAS’s PCIe slot and the drives installed. Multiple expansion units can be cascaded using QNAP’s JBOD support to balance data loads across enclosures, providing consistent performance for high-demand workloads.

Setup is straightforward: the TL-R1200PES-RP is powered on and managed by the host NAS through host-based power management, which links the power status of the JBOD with the NAS. Users can expand storage pools directly from the NAS using Storage & Snapshots Manager, allowing new RAID volumes to be added without disrupting existing storage or system services.
