The new Roland MN-10 Mood Pan
Bringing Tech, Heart and Soul to the world of electronic percussion
Since their introduction in the early 2000’s, Handpans (a dome shaped, tuned steel percussion instrument played with by hand) have grown in popularity among people with an interest in percussion, producers, musical educators and sound therapists. Known for their warm tones, harmonic tuning and soothing timbre. If you’ve ever had any first-hand experience with a handpan, you’ll know there’s just something special about its sound and feel. Now, as of June 2025 Roland has announced it has taken the essence and magic of a handpan and reimagined it for the modern creative with the MN-10.
Here at Scan Pro Audio we are extremely excited about the MN-10, promising to blend the world of sonic wellbeing with the advancements in sound technology that Roland has championed over the last 52 years of making instruments. Whether you're an experienced handpan player looking to explore new sounds, a sound therapist with a soft spot for tech, or just looking to start your journey into music for the first time, the MN-10 is an exciting and accessible addition to the world of electronic percussion.

On the surface the MN-10 is a compact, sleek and innovative take on a traditional handpan with nine touch-sensitive playing surfaces designed to be played with the fingers. Underneath the surface is a powerful electronic sound engine alongside an impressive inbuilt speaker making and a headphone jack for a quieter, more personal playing experience. Reaching a total playing time of 4 to 5 hours when powered by 6x AA batteries, means taking the pan to any remote sessions isn’t going to induce any worries of the instrument dying on you midway through playing. Alternatively, the unit can be powered via a 9-volt, 2 Amp USB C connection. Bluetooth 4.2 allows the user to play along to any chosen backing tracks/soundscapes and with pre-set sound banks such as tongue drum, handpan, gamelan and singing bowl sounds, there is huge opportunity for musical exploration with this instrument.

This isn’t just an emulation of a handpan, it promises to be a full-on creative tool. The MN-10’s 9 playing surfaces respond to touch velocity, pressure, and even more nuanced techniques such as palm striking on the edge of the unit. An additional control pad is included on the playing surface to make expressive, real time changes to the in-built sounds such as increased resonance or filter effects.

At Scan, tech is at the heart of what we do, so the introduction of a companion app is music to our ears. With the Mood Pan Plus app, available for Android and Apple devices, the user is able to control pitch and tone settings of the instrument, sensitivity and control over functions such as muting certain pads is also possible. The background soundtrack function can be explored through your smart device, as well as the option to expand on the inbuilt sound banks by loading extra sounds from the app, into the 4 available ‘User’ sound groups. It is easy to use and gives you full control without scrolling through pages of menus.
