AMD FX8000 8-Core CPUs

Date issued:

AMD's desktop FX processor range received a refresh in September 2014, introducing three new models to cater for a wider variety of users. For the enthusiast the new FX-8370 delivers the highest performance of any FX-8000-series processor released thus far. AMD also unveiled a pair of power-tuned models, the FX-8370E and FX-8320E, which cater for users requiring lower power consumption by having a reduced TDP of 95W, down from 125W.

All FX-8000-series parts make use of AMD's existing 'Piledriver' architecture and provide eight x86 cores targeting highly multi-threaded workloads. With an increasing number of software applications able to leverage higher core count,s AMD's eight-core FX processors, starting at just $146.99, are well-positioned to follow future computing trends.

The FX-8370 is the fastest FX-8000-series model with a 4GHz base frequency and 4.3GHz boost frequency, as shown in the table above. Within the complete AMD eight-core FX range the FX-8370 is positioned toward the middle of the pack as the FX-9370 and FX-9590 both offer significantly higher clockspeeds. The FX-8370 does, however, have the advantage of a noticeably lower TDP than the FX-9000 monsters; 125W compared to 220W. At $200 the FX-8370 offers a compelling alternative to Intel's Core i5 models.

Interestingly, AMD's performance-oriented eight-core FX range now touts power-optimised parts, indicated by the 'E' denotation. The FX-8320E and FX-8370E have frequency and power consumption overhauls allowing for a 24 per cent TDP reduction, from 125W to 95W, through lower base clocks. These new E-Series parts target users with less capable motherboards and lower cooling capacity.

The reduced 95W TDP on both E-Series parts is achieved through strict turbo mode behaviour; a trade-off that results in reduced performance. But do be aware that the FX-8320E and FX-8370E maintain their maximum turbo frequency when conducting lightly-threaded workloads. As the number of cores being loaded increases the overall frequency decreases. When all eight cores are fully loaded the CPUs revert to their base clocks to maintain the thermal envelope. Conveniently for buyers, there is no price penalty to be paid for choosing a power-optimised model, because the E-Series and their standard equivalents both sport identical price tags.

Continuing AMD's tradition of platform longevity all three new FX Series CPUs retain compatibility with the existing AM3+ socket and associated chipsets. Therefore, current owners of widely available 970, 980G, 990X and 990FX motherboards have a straightforward upgrade path towards AMD's eight-core range.

Performance Analysis

The new AMD FX-8000-series parts are designed to offer 'exceptional multi-core performance with best-in-class value,' according to the company. Resultantly, the performance of the eight-core FX-series CPUs needs to be assessed using multi-threaded workloads.

The popular performance benchmark Cinebench, along with test results from leading review sites, reveals that AMD's eight-core FX range provides stiff competition for Intel's current Core i5 offerings. Taking into further consideration the aggressive pricing of AMD's FX range it is clear to see why a buyer might consider choosing these CPUs for their next build. At the sub-$200 price point the AMD FX series offers class-leading multi-core performance.

Summary

With the traditional AMD strategy of aggressive pricing and competitive performance, the revamped eight-core FX Series processors are a strong choice. The variety of models on offer gives users a chance to choose between maximum performance or energy efficiency depending on their preference. Furthermore, enthusiasts and overclockers alike will be pleased by the multiplier-unlocked design and full eight x86 cores available on all models.
