System Buses & Bandwidth
Date Issued: 21st Oct 2008

In computing terms, system buses are used to connect various components to the motherboard’s core logic and, often, to each other. Modern PCs run with a multitude of high-speed buses ranging from the interconnects between, say, the chipset and the CPU, graphics card, memory, and peripherals.

It’s been a long time since MHz were the only part of a CPU’s specification that concerned people. Manufacturers take different approaches to CPU design, even when using the same architecture. That means for example, at the same clock speed, an Intel and AMD processor will deliver different performance.

The modern PC is potentially a mass of heat output and heat production hot spots. With CPUs rated at more than 100W of heat output, single graphics boards carrying similar ratings (and people want to run two!), multiple hard drives the norm, lots of memory and mainboards covered in heatpipes to combat toasty core logic and PWM circuits, a PC appreciably warming up a room when it’s working hard is no joke.

Watercooling
Date Issued: 19th Jun 2008

Watercooling for the PC has been around for years in some form or another, for at least as long as Scan have been in business, with basic physics defining why you want to use it. That means for air cooling, to cope with increasing temperature in the heatsink you need to move the air across it faster. That is why thermostatically controlled fans in your PC will turn faster the hotter something gets.

Silverstone ES02-USB 2.4GHz Wireless Eemote PC power/reset switch, USB 2.0 9-Pin interface is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but potentially flawed The idea of this is good, if not rather niche. Being able to remotely power or reboot your PC is great if you want to keep it tucked away from sight. This device plugs into a USB header on your motherboard to obtain it's power and connects to the power and reset pin headers on your motherboard. The provided key fob can then be used to power or reset your PC. There are pass-through connectors to connect to your case's power and reset button to still allow them to work. The major flaw with this is that it uses the USB2 header, which on my current and previous motherboard does not have the required 5v when the machine is powered off. This means the device cannot be used to power the computer on. However, once it's powered you can power off and reset using the fob. It is the inability to power on the PC which means I can't recommend it. If you are sure your motherboard supplies the needed 5v when powered off to the USB2 headers though, this may be what you need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this because I'm lazy. I bought this because I'm too lazy to go and turn my media tower on manually which is on the other side of the room in a TV unit. It's not IR so directional or line of sight does not matter when aiming the remote. Installation was easy although I still wish manufacturers made better front panel connectors on cases - they are so fiddly! The only small snag was coaxing my machine into BIOS to enable USB power on sleep so that the remote module detected the remote input whilst the PC was turned off. The main downside to the product is the remote is really small and quite easy to lose if you're not careful. This product could be ideal for a disabled user or if you plan to install your PC out of sight.
