Large-Format Planar Sound, Without the FussThe FiiO JadeAudio JT9 brings large-format planar magnetic technology to a headphone that's surprisingly practical for everyday listening. Its 95 × 86mm planar driver uses an ultra-thin diaphragm with FiiO's sapphire and aluminium dual-coating technology, combining low moving mass with the rigidity needed for controlled, accurate movement. The result is a headphone designed for fast transients, fine detail and the spacious presentation that makes open-back designs so popular with serious listeners.
The JT9's open-back construction lets the driver breathe, giving recordings more room to develop while helping separate instruments and individual elements of a mix. FiiO has also developed a uniform magnetic field around the planar driver, applying the driving force more evenly across the diaphragm to maintain consistent control and minimise unwanted distortion. One of the more interesting things about the JT9 is how accessible the design is. With 20Ω impedance and 95dB/mW sensitivity, it doesn't demand a huge desktop amplifier just to get moving, making it a good match for portable DAC/amps and digital audio players as well as dedicated headphone setups. A proper headphone amplifier can still provide additional headroom, but the JT9 is considerably easier to drive than many large planar designs.
Despite the substantial driver architecture, the JT9 weighs around 365g and features a foldable design, making it easier to store and transport than you might expect from a full-size planar headphone. FiiO also includes both a 3.5mm single-ended cable and 4.4mm balanced cable, so you've got straightforward connectivity for conventional headphone outputs as well as compatible balanced DAC/amps and players straight out of the box. With a 7Hz–40kHz frequency response, high sensitivity and a large open-back planar driver, the JT9 is a compelling option for listeners who want the scale and precision of planar technology without committing to an overly demanding or cumbersome setup.
