PSUs (Power Supply Units)
Date Issued: 4th Jul 2011

Let's face it, power-supply units (PSUs) are boring. Presented in what's usually a mundane box spitting cables from one end, this is a product that's neither aesthetically pleasing nor technically interesting to the majority of self-builders.

80 Plus certification
Date Issued: 18th Nov 2010

Conceived back in 2004 and brought to market just a year later, the 80 PLUS initiative is one of many standards introduced in an effort to increase energy efficiency in modern technology. Targeting computer power supplies, it awards PSUs that are able to achieve an energy efficiency of over 80 per cent at varying workloads and a power factor of 0.9 or more at 100 per cent load.

Reviews
520W Seasonic Platinum 520 Fanless, Full Modular, 80 PLUS Platinum, SLI/CrossFire, Single Rail, 43A, Fanless, ATX PSU is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a "must have"-product I've installed it a week ago without any problems and it's been running since then 24/7. It makes no noise. No humming sound, no coil whine, no clicking whatsoever. It's been completely silent regardless if the PC is idle or under load. It comes with an impressive 7-year warranty. One needs to keep hold of the original package, because there's a small sticker on it, which when lost voids its warranty. The cables are fully modular and all black. See the specifications here at Scan for their exact numbers (which I've verified are correct). It further comes with 4 case screws, 5 plastic cable ties and an additional 3 Velcro cable ties. Only the black velvet bag, which the PSU came in, seems unnecessary. As digital PSUs are only starting to enter into the market am I glad that this isn't one of them. It reaches it's high efficiency of almost 94% by using a traditional design based on decades of experience, which is reassuring. A detailed test of this PSU can be found here: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Seasonic/SS-520FL/ It's needless to say after I've replaced an ageing PSU (625W with 82% eff.) that the PC now use a whole 10W less in power when idle and about 30W-40W when under load. What I've further noticed is that the on-board LED of the mainboard and the graphics card remain lit much longer than before, which suggest this PSU has got a strong reserve against power interruptions. (See also the review at TechPowerUp, which confirms a high Hold-Up time.) It won't replace a UPS, but it's good to know one has less to fear from the occasional "brief flickering of lights". It's a "must have"-product for me and the reason why I've bought it, because it represents the future of PSUs: higher efficiencies without any noise. There is no way you wouldn't want this. The only downside, and also the reason why I am giving it 4 out 5 stars, is it's currently high price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent PSU design My media centre PC recently died, and after a little investigation it turned out to be the most expensive piece that had gone - the fanless PSU. I purchased the Seasonic as a replacement, at about half the cost of the original (price/performance has improved in the last few years). The Seasonic comes with a modular design that allows a range of power connectors to the motherboard and peripherals. While this is not uncommon, the PSU I replaced was the older single fixed bundle of cables type. If I were to need to replace this one in future, it would take far less effort unplugging and reattaching everything. The packaging was all high quality, the instructions clear, and it even came in a little velvet bag. The attaching screw points were in line with the existing case and sufficiently numerous that I expect it will fit most cases. Checking the PD, it maintains the reference volts better than its predecessor. It's too early to judge for durability, if it dies within a year I'll comment again. Please note that the PSU vents point upward; a tower case with vents on the top would likely be a best match.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Silence is...the 520w Season fanless PSU ;-) Exactly what I was after. I'd measured my PC power usage at 288w at maximum load and chose this PSU to replace a normal fan cooled 750w PSU. I had managed to get all case noise down enough that the only sound was coming from my PSU. Once I replaced that with the 520w Season Platinum Fanless PSU...SILENCE! If what I've described is something you're trying to do...this PSU is worth the money for high quality, efficiency and silent operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shhhhh Bought for a quiet server, very slight clicking noise if you stick your ear right next to it but otherwise totally silent, runs cool even under load (8-core AMD FX 8320e, two GT720s, 3 SSDs and 2 HDDs). Will most likey buy another to replace the noisy PSU in my older server.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best power supply ever I've been through too many power supplies trying to find the one with the quietest fans, they all promised so much but still pumped out way too much noise for my liking. Then I discovered this! It's enough for my needs. If I was into gaming more and had two graphics cards I MAY think twice, but I think it could handle a general two card set up fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fairly Unique concept, superbly executed and so far running flawlessly In my case the PSU I had struggled to pull air to cool itself as the main system fan produces such good airflow over the top of the PSU fan. So after having that PSU reach silly temps under load and making a hideious racket under no load. Even with attempts at ducting (and this was a gold rated PSU) I decided to try a fanless. On arrival I was impressed with the solidity of the caseing - its rather full of holes for ventilation but ridgid as can be. Since installing it in my system even at full load for several hours of continous gaming its still running soo cool the air out the case only feels a few degrees up on ambient and the nearest I could get to the internal heatsinks with my thermocouple indicated around 40 celcius. I've only been running it a few weeks but I can't see it failing for a long time to come as its running so cool. N.B. While in my case with a 12" fan on one side it stays perfectly cool the lack of fan will almost certainly lead to overheating if the airflow in your case is poor. I expect a normal ATX format will work just fine but be catious and use a themometer in for the first few hours to be sure you case has sufficent airflow.. In conclusion I definatly recomend it as a quiet PSU for a general purpose computer in most cases - the load shouldn't build up heat. Or for a gaming rig just be careful you don't have too large a power requirement and have good airflow.
