PSUs (Power Supply Units)
PSUs (Power Supply Units)
Date Issued: 4th Jul 2011

Let's face it, power-supply units (PSUs) are boring. Presented in what's usually a mundane box spitting cables from one end, this is a product that's neither aesthetically pleasing nor technically interesting to the majority of self-builders.

Conceived back in 2004 and brought to market just a year later, the 80 PLUS initiative is one of many standards introduced in an effort to increase energy efficiency in modern technology. Targeting computer power supplies, it awards PSUs that are able to achieve an energy efficiency of over 80 per cent at varying workloads and a power factor of 0.9 or more at 100 per cent load.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by Decent There was only one previous review when I posted this which was someone saying the fan was stuck at a reasonable high speed and it was loud, I'm happy to say this hasn't been my experience. I haven't noticed the PSU noise over the CPU and GPU fans so if it does make noise, it's much less than the other bits of my build so nothing to write home about (to confirm I just stuck my head next to the intake for the PSU and could barely hear the fan). Anyway, not much else to say really, comes with everything you'll need and hasn't given me any trouble whatsoever and I don't have a low power build (see below)! I did try the build below with a 980ti and that was too much for the poor thing so I would advise against that! Tbf the 980ti does recommend a much bigger PSU, I'm cutting it a little fine with the 980 in there really. Specs: 2700k in a Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe, 16GB RAM, GTX 980 and couple of SSDs. 14 November 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Good PSU, loud fan, very annoying As stated above, psu is good, like the cables, the fan is horribly bad, stays at 2000+ rpm when idle 3000+ when under 30% load. Horrible ! 21 April 2015
