Award-winning technology

Founded in 2017 by tech expert, Paul Hallett; experienced veterinarian, Robert Dawson; and veterinary dermatologist, Sarah Warren, Vet-AI is a research and development company dedicated to overhauling the pet healthcare industry. Together they strive to bring animal health in line with some of the ground-breaking innovations seen in the human health sector and work to create solutions that focus on supporting pets and their owners, giving them access to affordable and convenient care when their pets need it most.

Vet-AI has already received recognition across the UK, being named one of the top ten tech start-ups in the 2019 Tech Nation Rising Stars and won top honours in the ‘Innovation’ and runner up in the ‘Newcomer’ categories in the 2019 Yorkshire Business Masters awards.

Project Background

The co-founders at Vet-AI spent a considerable time researching and understanding pet owners’ needs, as well as the state of the technology landscape in the veterinary sector, in order to develop a cutting-edge, bespoke app for pet owners to diagnose symptoms and receive recommended treatment for their pets, from the comfort of their home, at any time of the day.

Project Approach

The team began using GPU-accelerated compute from cloud service providers, however this proved limiting when it came to the scale of pet symptom and ownership data they were dealing with. The introduction of a dedicated AI development workstation (shown below) helped them perform faster data analysis than was previously available to them, and establish the technological foundation of the desired app.

The resulting app, Joii, was launched alongside a flagship brand and veterinary practice. Using Joii, concerned pet owners simply list their pet’s symptoms, which are then assessed by the AI triage model. The app then generates information to help them decide what to do next, whether it be no action at all, consult a vet online or visit a practice.

The Joii app also offers online consultations via video with vets and online chats with vet nurses and contains a library of vet-written articles.

The Scan Partnership

Scan were approached by Vet-AI as they needed a cost-effective alternative to the cloud-based compute they were currently using. The Scan and 3XS Systems team worked together with Vet-Ai to design and build a bespoke AI development workstation based around NVIDIA GPUs. Scan also recommended Vet-Ai join NVIDIA’s Inception programme, which offers numerous benefits and support for new small business starting out with AI.

"We needed a GPU machine as we were at capacity of working on free cloud-based GPU systems. Scan helped to get a professional grade GPU machine to match our needs, and also helped to achieve this within budget by advising us to join the NVIDIA Inception Programme. Scan were exceptional in their consideration of our needs and explained the many different options available to us "
