Win this Focusrite Scarlett 4th gen custom PC
SOS Awards 2024 Winner — Best Audio Interface

Who was this built for?

Focusrite was founded in 1985 by Rupert Neve, based within the UK in High Wycombe. With a 40 year history of designing and supplying high-quality solutions like the original ISA 110 mic preamp that launched the company, their hardware designs continue to be found a the heart in recording studios around the world.

With an early focus on more traditional out-board gear, it was the move into audio interfaces that cemented Focusrite’s legacy today, with early breakout successes like the M-box collaboration for Pro Tools LE and the original Saffire Firewire range that offered both solid performance and great value solutions that stood out in the market at the time.

However, it was the follow-up range in its iconic red livery that changed everything and birthed a modern classic. The Focusrite Scarlett range of USB interfaces since its original release back in 2012, have across 4 generations cemented the range as studio stalwarts, which have been used in countless hits that have been created everywhere from small home setups to the largest of professional recording studios.

The Concept

We wanted to pay homage to the legendary Focusrite 2i2 design and create a PC that would feature the interface in an integral way.

Our Scan 3XS project team took the 2i2 audio interface and scaled up design to create a PC case, custom built to mirror the look and even feel of the 2i2 with a brushed aluminium shell along with matching the Scarlett interface range distinctive colour finish. The 2i2 features halo lighting on the volume control knobs and we recreated the look by fitting dual be quiet! light wings to the front of the case, with the fan lighting creating the front panel effect to complete the look.

The pride of place of course goes to the latest 4th Gen Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 mounted front and centre of the case, with its I/O connections patched through to the rear of the case for easy connectivity. The 2i2 over the years, thanks to its ease of use and great value has established itself as many budding producers first audio interface, leading to it being one of the best selling audio interface ranges. Building its functionality straight into the computer case, creates a unique all in one recording and production concept.

What's Inside?

Built around a mini-ITX mainboard form factor, the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X strikes a balance of high-performance with an easy to manage power draw, to ensure that even in this compact case we maintain a cool and quiet solution that is perfect for any studio environment. We then added 32GB of DDR5 5600Mhz Corsair memory and 3TB of Samsung NVMe M.2 storage spread across the OS and projects drive, to ensure quick loading times and effortless handling of any sound libraries.

Central to the system is the ASUS ROG Strix B850-I Gaming WiFi mainboard, providing us with a number of connectivity options to integrate it into the studio workflow. With both an on-board 2.5G ethernet port and WiFi 7 included, it ensures a superfast connection to the outside world. For connecting studio hardware directly to the PC, it has 6 x USB type-A and 2 x USB-type-C along with the audio connections for the in-built Focusrite 2i2 interface with dual 6.3" jack outputs and dual XLR inputs.

The diminutive Zotac NVIDIA RTX 5060 Solo graphics card rounds out the system connectivity, able to support a total of 4 screens spread across 3 x Display Port and 1 x HDMI outputs. Having been designed for use in small form factor case solutions, in graphic card terms the relatively small size makes it a perfect fit inside of this compact case.
