A hard drive is the permanent storage device for a computer system. They can be either of the mechanical or solid state type. This is where the operating system, device drivers, programs and all your files are stored. Hard drives come in different physical sizes namely 2.5" and 3.5". Storage sizes are given in Gigabytes and more recently Terabytes for the larger sizes now on the market. They connect to the motherboard using a specific interface cable such as an IDE (also known as PATA), SATA, SAS or SCSI connection. SATA II - 1TB - 3TB

These high capacity 3.5" hard drives utilise the SATA II 3Gb/s interface, making them ideal for a range of applications including desktops, workstations and servers. The speed of the SATA II interface makes these range of drives the ideal choice for systems that are required to perform a range of tasks often at the same time. Some hard drives include NCQ (Native Command Queuing), which allows the drive to internally optimise the order in which received read and write commands are executed. Check that your motherboard can support the capacity of the drive you buy.
