A hard drive is the permanent storage device for a computer system. They can be either of the mechanical or solid state type. This is where the operating system, device drivers, programs and all your files are stored. Hard drives come in different physical sizes namely 2.5" and 3.5". Storage sizes are given in Gigabytes and more recently Terabytes for the larger sizes now on the market. They connect to the motherboard using a specific interface cable such as an IDE (also known as PATA), SATA, SAS or SCSI connection. IDE 2.5 inch hard drives for laptops. These are for laptops which feature the IDE (sometimes referred to as Parallel ATA or PATA) interface. Note that a 2.5 inch IDE drive has one connector which features both the interface and the power connector in one.
