Computer Aided Design (CAD) applications enable the creation of accurate 2D and 3D models to help visualise objects and scenarios prior to development and manufacturing. Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) applications take this process
a step further with the ability to then analyse these models - in short, CAD is the process of designing a product and CAE is when you simulate and test it.
CAE operations are much more computationally-intensive than CAD, so require more powerful workstations with one or more high-end NVIDIA RTX GPUs, to ensure productive workflow and creativity.

AutoCAD is the most popular CAD package used by designers and architects to create precise 2D and 3D drawings. Accurate modelling and visualisation requires high performance low latency hardware.
Our application experts understand the specific requirements of this demanding application and have designed a range of AutoCAD optimised workstations.
The two most important factors for providing a brilliant experience in AutoCAD are the CPU and the GPU.

Whether you work with 2D or 3D models, AutoCAD will benefit from CPUs with a high frequency and high IPC, so CPUs with lots of cores will have little impact as the application is predominantly single-threaded.

AutoCAD relies on the CPU for the majority of tasks, so an NVIDIA T-series GPU will suffice for many projects, but when using 3D models, especially more complex ones we would recommend an RTX GPU.

SolidWorks incorporates CAD (Computer Aided Design) elements, but it is much more than that. It is a full software suite which incorporates CAD and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) capabilities, and is primarily focused on components, machinery and 3D parts – hence its widespread use in engineering and manufacturing industries.
The best place to start when choosing your SolidWorks systems is with your intended use – designing and modelling will work well on a lower powered workstation whereas rendering and simulation will require more powerful hardware.

Professional graphics applications such as SolidWorks are GPU intensive, and so are typically run-on costly desktop workstations that take up a lot of office space.
If this is going to be an issue for yourself or your organisation, then the 3XS Cloud Workstation service from Scan enables you to run applications like this, virtually in the cloud, on any device from anywhere, even a thin and light laptop with no GPU. All the heavy processing is done using cloud computing and transmitted over the internet to your device. Find out more in our video above, or get in touch with our experts at Scan Cloud to discuss your requirements.
