The modern PC is potentially a mass of heat output and heat production hot spots. With CPUs rated at more than 100W of heat output, single graphics boards carrying similar ratings (and people want to run two!), multiple hard drives the norm, lots of memory and mainboards covered in heatpipes to combat toasty core logic and PWM circuits, a PC appreciably warming up a room when it’s working hard is no joke.

Watercooling
Date Issued: 19th Jun 2008

Watercooling for the PC has been around for years in some form or another, for at least as long as Scan have been in business, with basic physics defining why you want to use it. That means for air cooling, to cope with increasing temperature in the heatsink you need to move the air across it faster. That is why thermostatically controlled fans in your PC will turn faster the hotter something gets.

Rated 1.5 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 1 out of 5 by DO NOT BUY THIS CASE! The title may seem harsh, however I must warn, this case has a huge design flaw... if there are two fans installed in the front of the case, the front panel of the case, behind the door, can no longer fit as the clip at the top is blocked, meaning it is left to flap about and fall out every time you open the front door panel. Other than that, the build quality, space and features are very good value for money and the case is very quiet if you attach some soundproofing to the side panels (as they tend to rattle a bit). Despite this, you would be stupid to but it, as there are far more cases out there for the same money that actually work! 23 September 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Cheap case with some poor design issues. For £32 it is an ok case, but knowing what I do now I would rather have spent more on a Fractal R4 or similar. The case was purchased for my second PC which is why I thought I would try a cheaper case. The whole case has a mass similar to both panels on my Fractal ARC MIDI. This should give you an idea of the thin metal used on the Zalman R1. That being said it does feel somewhat sturdy. The inside is easy to work on and no sharp edges, except for the break away PCI covers. Cable routing can look tidy with some effort. There are a few glaring issues: 1. The top fan vent cover is impossible to remove from the outside so one has to ask why the handle? The only way to remove it is to push on the round contact points from inside the case, this releases the vent cover quite easily. 2. There are 2 x 120mm supports for fans in the front, however if the front top position is used the front filter wont fit as the retention clip bumps in to the fan! 3. The paint job on the front panel looks not too bad, however be warned...it is a very thin paint job. I have already managed to scratch it which reveals an ugly greyish plastic underneath. It scratches very easily. You could probably take the paint of with just a thumb nail and moderate pressure. 4. My case had a faint scratch about 6cm long on the top side plastic brand new out of the box. The brown box had no sign of impact so this happened before it was boxed up. The case also looks better in the pictures I have seen online than in real life. If you are after a cheap case I would look elsewhere. Better quality cases look nicer for longer. 04 September 2014
