Professionally Built PCs vs Self-Built

Anyone can build a PC, so what really makes the difference between any old PC and a 3XS PC? For starters, our team has been designing and building PCs for more than 20 years, so we have a huge amount of experience in building highly reliable systems that deliver the most performance for your budget. These are the benefits you receive when buying a professionally built 3XS system versus building a system yourself.

No Compatibility Headaches

It can take weeks to research the right combination of components, not just to ensure you get the most bang for your buck but to minimise the chance of one component being incompatible with another. Whether you buy a system from our configurator or a custom spec system our engineers will do all this hard work for you, ensuring that when your system is delivered it performs flawlessly.

Intensively Tested

Building a PC only takes a few hours, but installing all the software and making sure that everything is configured properly and that your software runs stably takes up a huge amount of time. By ordering a 3XS system our engineers take this painful process away, as all our systems undergo a strenuous Quality Control procedure which includes updating Windows, installing the latest drivers and motherboard BIOS. Overclocked systems receive an additional 24 hour burn-in test to ensure stability.

Peace of Mind

Unfortunately PC components do occasionally fail, and when this happens if you’ve built your PC yourself you’re on your own. However, with a professionally built Scan 3XS system you’re no longer alone. Our technical support team is available 7 days a week, from 9am to 10pm Mon - Fri, 10am to 6pm on Saturdays and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. Click here for more info on how to get technical support for your 3XS system.

If our support team is unable to fix your system remotely and it’s still under warranty we’ll either send out an engineer to visit your home or office or repair it or have it repaired in our state of the art factory in Lancashire.

A Work of Art

We don't just build PCs in our state-of-the-art factory, we craft them. For instance, we route and tidy all the cables around the sides of the case. This not only makes your PC look great and easier to upgrade in the future, but eases airflow through the case resulting in a cooler and quieter PC. In addition, we can customise your PC for you, not just the components inside but also its appearance, so if you fancy a PC in an unusual shape or colour we look forward to hearing from you.

Widely Acclaimed

Our 3XS PCs have won hundreds of awards in the press from publications such as Custom PC, Develop3D, Expert Reviews, HEXUS, PC Gamer and PC Pro. In addition 3XS has won Custom PC’s annual Dream PC competition every year it has run since 2007. You can read all our reviews here plus customer reviews on the configurator.

Rapid Delivery

Sometimes you just need a system right now. Maybe your existing system has kicked the bucket or you’ve found that your old workhorse can’t hope with the latest game or application you just bought. F-series systems are pre-built and tested in our factory, so can be collected same day or delivered next-day to your home or office.

Warranty & Technical Support

Another key difference is that all Scan Value Series PCs are covered by our 2 Year Warranty. This means that if your system develops a fault in its first year we will collect, repair and return it to you. In year 2 the warranty is Return to Base, so we cover parts and labour only. Scan H20i, Intel Core i7 7700 "Kaby Lake", 8GB DDR4, 1TB HDD, Win 10 is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basic looks but cracking performance at a good price For a Home/Office PC I think this is very good value for the level of performance it provides. I did though add a mid-range graphics card and a 250GB Samsung Evo 850 SSD for the system disc so can not really comment on how well it works as delivered. Style wise the case looks a bit dated but this is not really a problem if you are going to hide it under a desk. The case provides plenty of room to get at everything and there is space to add more drives. Removing the blanking panel from an expansion port was a bit of a challenge as they are formed as part of the case and have to be snapped off which requires some care with the motherboard installed. I was also not terribly happy with the motherboard I/O shield. It seemed to be stood away from the motherboard and interfered a little with the external connectors. This though is not really an issue for a system that not going to get moved around. The motherboard, being an H81 is entry level for its series but has 4 sata ports (2 3Gb/s & 2 6GB/s) so as built has one of each of these free. There is a PCIe x16 slot for a graphics card and 3 PCIe x1 slots although you would probably loose one of these with a modern wide graphics card. It also has 2 RAM slots one which is free allowing a possible expansion to a maximum of 16GB. The 500W PSU is nice and has an additional sata power cable and an extra 4-way cable for another optical drive. The cables are though a bit short and will not reach the bottom of the case where the case documentation suggests you can fit an SSD without an adaptor. The USB recovery key is a very nice touch. I found it worked really well to install the OS onto the SSD. Much easier and faster than trying to clone it off the supplied HDD. It was also very nice to find none of the rubbish you get installed on commercial factory built systems. The optical drive is very basic but works fine. The build quality is very good with all the cables nicely laid out and tied down. The cream on cake is the i7 processor which provides fantastic performance for a machine at this level. So while it looks a bit basic it does though provide excellent performance and a reasonable expansion capability and I think is very good value for its intended, home/office target.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Scan H20i Pre-built PC I ordered this PC to use for photo editing. When I opened it I was disappointed to see the lack of facilities to expand the storage. I decided that would back up the OS but could not; nor could I burn a photo to a CD. I was told the reason for this was that I had a trial version of Windows but I suspected a faulty DVD drive. After experiencing a slow response from Scan about this I decided to return it and was eventually refunded in full. I now have a similar spec PC with an SSD and 1TB of storage running Widows 8.1 which I built around my old case, HDD's and power supply for a similar cost and it does everything I want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good PC Very Quiet. Well built basic case, all wiring tidy. Limited a little on SATA ports, but plenty of PCI-e to expand that. I bought this as a replacement to my HTPC, as am very pleased. HDMI is very good at playing all the differentmovie file types. Added a SSD and rebuilt the OS onto it. Now boots very fast into logon. Can't believe the low temp and low noise of the system. Good Value as a startup HTPC - Gaming Centre (Good for Stream etc..)

Questions & Answers

Does this machine come with 2 x 4Gb memory chips or 1 x 8Gb. I need a total of 16Gb

Will this machine take an LN63137 usb3 expansion board as I need extra usb ports without the mess of an external unit. Is there enough room and Sata connections on the motherboard to take an extra 4 hard drive and is the cooling fan and power supply sufficient for these additions?
