Panasonic AU-EVA1: Compact, Light, One Step Above the Rest

main

The Ultimate StandardThe Panasonic AU-EVA1 is the ultimate standard for compact, lightweight video cameras. With its 5.7K sensor at a 35mm size, this tiny device captures absolutely stunning images at all resolutions.

5.7K Sensor for the Best Resolutions

graph

Downsampling for Better Quality With the 5.7K sensor, you won’t get 5.7K video out of the EVA1, but a downsampled 4K or lower resolution that yields a far higher quality than almost any other dedicated video camera on the market. Combining this with the V-Log/V-Gamut features, the camera produces an incredibly accurate looking image, with a high dynamic range and broad colours, the camera maintains the colour information needed.

Dual Native ISO

The EVA1 has a Dual Native ISO, allowing you to get the shot you need in almost any lighting situation, giving you great flexibility. At 800 and 2500, the two native ISOs give you enough wiggle room to tackle almost any situation.

Flexibility with the EVA1

Inexpensive Storage

Speaking of flexibility, the EVA1 records directly to SD cards, eliminating the need to invest in expensive storage solutions. This opens up the camera to a wider range of cinematographers, allowing for indie filmmakers to create their masterpiece with only needing to buy inexpensive SD Cards.

Lightweight and Ready to Fly

With its lightweight body, clocking in at only 1.2kg, this makes the EVA1 ideal for attaching to drones for glorious UHD footage that some drones are just incapable of capturing. Because of its weight, when you have to consider using a gimbal, there won’t be too much of a hassle putting it all together and worrying that the drone won’t fly.

EF Mount

The Panasonic EVA1 uses the native EF-mount, giving you access to a wide range of lenses and use the ones you might already have. EIS, Electronic Image Stabilisation covers you for moments of camera shake and blur, while the options for accessories is fairly open due to the EVA1’s fairly universal connectors (XLR, HDMI, SDI) and mounting options.

Make the Best Even Better

At Scan Pro Video, we highly recommend that you look at our range of EF Mount Lenses from Schneider. Because the EVA1 will take them all, the choice of what you want out of the camera and your project is up to you. They're all designed to support 4K video production and will also fit on your DSLR, giving you double the reason to invest.

For monitoring the Teradek Serv Pro, is ideal for modern on set or location shoots. With the ability to stream to Teradek's free app, up to 4 individuals can monitor the camera over the Serv's built in network or when on Wi-Fi, up to 10.

When it comes to editing, you need something fast and not just blazing fast, but Thunderbolt 3's 40Gbps fast. Transfer whole 4K filming sessions over in minutes rather than hours with the LaCie 2big Dock, which has a huge amount of storage, charges your devices and will take those SD Cards directly, leaving slots and USB ports free from dongles.

Reviews
Panasonic AU-EVA1 Compact 5.7K Super 35mm Cinema Camera, EF Mount, HDMI & SDI 4K Outputs, Electronic Image Stabilization is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A truly great film camera I bought this camera from Scan over a year ago and it is the 3rd or 4th Panasonic video camera I have owned. I have also owned and used several Sony, Canon and other video cameras of various generations. If you are looking for a great film camera that will give you 'those' killer images that just stand out and also work in post-prod this is the box for you. What stands out is the quality of the image, the excellent construction and the low price. At under £6k, it is a steal! I firstly must state that I bought this to make movies and TBH, I use a DSLR for those grab-and-go moments. I use the EVA-1 with stands, dollies and a jib and with a set of Xeen primes. The EF lens mount means the choice of lenses is vast. It is as a fully-featured movie camera that the EFA-1 excels - though I'm sure the small size, handy grip and lightweight design means it's probably a good ENG camera. The on-board monitor screen is OK'ish and is really just for going through the menus and monitoring the log/RAW image. You are probably going to record and monitor on an external box from Atomos or BMD which gives you ready-made monitoring LUTs. The menu options are a bit OTT complicated, but the 'Home' button is there to rescue you! Main plus-points - The small size means that it is great for Steadicam, hand-held and jib work, even with a smallish remote head or gimble. The 5.7K sensor really does make a difference and the fact that it is an odd number and not 4K goes a long way to eliminate moirés. It just looks better and deals with skin-tones better than most of the competition. You can record 5.7RAW to an external drive if you want to, though I stick to 4K on an Atomos Shogun. It has all the usual output codecs for broadcast use. The dual ISO rates (800 and 2500) means low light performance is bonkers good! That could save you a fortune in lighting, though with good lenses, you can go so low that the actors might end up walking into the scenery! If you want to do slomo, it can go to 240fps at 2K for action and FX sequences. Built-in physical ND filters, so no more grubbing through the filter box. The excellent dynamic range allows you to 'see' deep into shadows without blown-out highlights. Panasonic build-quality, reliability and ruggedness. I've dropped it a few times (and my old Panasonic EZ-1 from the 90s is still working after about 25 years). Minus points No viewfinder (doesn't worry me, but might worry some) and that monitor could be a bit better. Summary - If you want a better image, the Arri Alexa LF Mini will give you slightly better colours and a 4:4:4:4 output. It costs ten times as much though.
