Amazing product for the beginners and enthusiastsI've been an on and off DJ for many years, when I was younger I used to perform in a few local pubs using good old fashioned vinyl but when things moved over to digital I decided to give it up and sold all my gear and vinyls (worse mistake I ever made btw) but I have always maintained a healthy interest in DJing and have kept a digital library on my PC which I use to mess about with whenever I get bored.
Just recently my interest in DJing has started to grow again but as I am unable to afford a full set of equipment to take up the hobby properly and as I am really used to using software I decided the better option would be a DJ controller. After looking around at many sources for reviews the Mixtrack Pro 3 kept coming up as the one to buy for my situation.
The controller is amazing, its really lightweight and has only one cable for power and data so moving it around is a breeze, I had it at my friends house yesterday for a session and transporting it was so easy.
The quality of the controller is as you would expect from Numark, the xfader is lightweight allowing for really quick cuts and fades while the volume sliders have a little weight to them. The pitch sliders are really heavy and have a really long travel which allows for really fine control over the pitch, adjustments of 0.01bpm are easy.
The buttons have a nice feel and tactile response, the pad buttons have a rubbery texture while the playback control buttons have a plastic feel which means you can tell them apart without looking at them really easily.
The adjustment knobs all feel exactly like they do on a real mixer, nothing more to be said about them, they're perfect.
The jogwheel isn't quite as heavy as it would be on real CDJs so you have to move it a little further than you would normally but this isn't an issue and actually allows for a more fine grained control over the track on the deck plus I'm sure if I dug into the options of my software I could adjust the sensitivity anyway.
The only negative thing I can say is the looping controls could be better. You can set loops manually or automatically but Auto Loop acts weird and jumps to a random beat to start the loop from instead of starting it at the beat I moved to plus it always does a 4 beat loop. You can then use the 1/2 button to make the loop 1/2 length or shift+1/2 buttons to make double length but I find myself just reaching for my mouse when ever I need to do loops. You could get away with it by doing manual looping if you had no mouse but that is really quite slow.
One other very small gripe is it has no per deck gain control and only has master gain but I wouldn't even class that as a negative.
My recommendation for anyone purchasing this would be to budget in an extra £99 for a Virtual DJ 8 License.
The thing has no native support in Traktor and only works with user generated mappings which are not even close to ideal so to use it with Traktor you would have to spend hours manually mapping everything yourself. The jogwheel adjusts the pitch(?), play pause only plays and wont pause, the pad buttons don't work plus I have so far been totally unable to get the cue output to work through the headphones at all. Not a good experience with Traktor.
Serato DJ Starter is included and the controller does work as expected however I find Serato to not be as accurate as either Traktor or VDJ. The beat blending never seems to be perfect and you can clearly hear both beats even when you've got them lined up perfectly plus I find that Seratos low/mid/high faders sound fake. Lastly Serato Starter cannot record your mixes, you must buy the full version for that. Of course this is personal opinion, your mileage may vary and its included to you should at least test it out for yourself.
Virtual DJ 8 is where this controller really shines. You plug it in and VDJ pops up to say its found it, you click OK and it just works OOTB, no messing around with sound inputs/outputs or mappings and everything the controller can do works as you would expect it to work. If you do dig into the sound settings you can have the master and cue outputs sent to any combination of your PCs soundcard and the controllers soundcard allowing total control over where your sound is played back to, something neither Traktor (Traktor is supposed to be able to but it doesn't work with the Mixtrack) nor Serato can do. When using the free version of VDJ the controller will only work for 10 minutes at a time before VDJ disables it and nags you to buy a license but considering the license is the same price as buying either Traktor or Serato its more than worth it IMO.
I've had the controller for 3 days now and used it for around 6 or so hours in total and I can already mix like a pro using it.
