MSI B350 TOMAHAWK, AMD B350, S AM4, DDR4, SATA3, M.2 (PCIe), 2-Way CrossFire, Realtek LAN, USB 3.1 Gen1 A+C, ATX is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from With an updated BIOS, this board works like a dream. So, I was quite nervous about this board. I'd read that it was the best value B350 motherboard available from several reviewers, but I also got to see the kinds of issues that early adopters were having with this board, and I wasn't sure how many of those issues I would encounter myself. The biggest concern I had was that it may not like the RAM that I got, and even if it was properly detected and worked at stock speeds, the rated speed would not be achievable. Even with the BIOS that came out-of-the-box, I did not encounter this problem. XMP profiles work flawlessly. One problem that I did encounter, however, was very slow POST times (not related to the typically slow POST from the very first cold boot on Ryzen systems). This was something I was very much aware of going in, and I was confident that a BIOS update would fix it. On the latest BIOS, it takes less than 20 seconds between pressing the power button and being presented with my Lubuntu login screen (installed on a Samsung 850 EVO). Windows 8.1 takes a similar amount of time in a typical boot up. My only gripe is that there is no POST beep (and yes, I did remember to install a speaker!), however there is an option to have the Caps Lock light turn on upon successful POST. Now, as you can probably tell from my complaint about a POST beep, I'm pretty old school. This is also reflected in the way that I have my operating systems set up. Although I have UEFI support on both this board and my last one, I have my boot drives set up with MBR (legacy BIOS) instead of GPT (UEFI). This was made necessary by the previous board, which had very few boot options. Installing a UEFI OS would potentially hijack the entire booting process, and I needed access to a legacy boot menu. The boot options on this board are, quite frankly, f**king awesome! There is a very nice UI on the landing page in the BIOS, which allows you to prioritise, not only all of your boot devices, but whether or not it boots them up in UEFI or legacy mode. This will allow you to experiment with UEFI installations without potentially locking yourself out of your legacy boot setup. Major props to MSI for this. Finally, early adopters were reporting that enabling virtualisation on this board would cause instability and boot loops. On the latest BIOS, I'm having no issues with virtualisation whatsoever. Very stable performance with QEMU and KVM on Linux. In the future, I would like to upgrade to an APU so that I can use dGPU passthrough with a Windows virtual machine and eliminate the need to multi-boot for gaming. With IOMMU enabled, this should be achievable on this board. I think that covers everything. I bought this board expecting all sorts of exotic issues, but on the latest BIOS, everything works like a charm. This is my first experience with MSI as well, and I'm very happy thus far. If a weird setup like mine can work, then you can probably use this board without any issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value product for a Ryzen 5 This product is a great option for a Ryzen 5. I am using a 1600 and it is super fast. Running ddr4 memory at 2999 and this will improve when further updates to the bios are released. Please read regarding the usual teething problems related to the ryzen architecture. Many issues that people have claimed to be with this board are in fact generic amd issues that can be solved through research.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A solid, mid-priced board that just works. OK, lets get the negative thing out of the way first, it has red ambient lighting which I was unable to turn off. Not a major problem but, annoying none the less. And, as far as complaints go, that's it. This board works flawlessly. The BIOS is nice and easy to work through and, for the price, has enough of the right features if you are looking to build a nice little rig. I teamed it with the Ryzen R7 1800X, 32 Gig of 2400MHz RAM, a 512GB Samsung M.2 Nvme drive and a couple of SSD's I had knocking around from my previous build. The PC posted without an issue and everything worked as I would expect it to. Temperature reporting was a known issue when the AM4 boards first came along but this has been sorted and my CPU (which is under a bespoke water cooling system) idles at 28C and rarely hit 45C when under full load. All in all, a brilliant little board and well worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Promising Early AM4 Baord It's still early days for the AM4 platform and as a consequence, there are still many bugs with the majority of the AM4 based motherboards, in particular the B350 chipset. Having said that though, there aren't any major problems with this board, and regular BIOS updates have improved its stability since launch. I did initially have a problem with the board not detecting my Ryzen 5 1600 with the original BIOS version, however Scan kindly updated the board for me with a Ryzen 7 chip free of charge (minus shipping charges). This may seem like a big issue, however having done some research this seems to be a caveat with many of the current B350 boards. MSI did tell me that the board supported R5 from the stock BIOS but I think there was also some memory compatibility issues with this first BIOS revision so I couldn't get my setup to work. Memory seems to be where this board has struggled the most, with all of the BIOS updates offering improved memory stability. Personally, I haven't been able to get a stable overclock on my 2400MHz Corsair LPX memory (currently running at 2133MHz) but it doesn't seem to provide much of a performance increase anyway. The board has plenty of features, for example intuitive fan and pump control from its array of PWM headers, and a RGB header. The VRMs seem pretty stable - I managed to overclock my R5 1600 to 3.80GHz at 1.365v with no overheating issues. I'm sure the board is capable of higher voltage but I was not so lucky with he silicon lottery and can't get my chip over 3.85GHz without instabilities, even at higher voltages and I dare not go above 1.4v. Overall, I would say this is the perfect board for the mid range user and provides many features which will only be improved with time as the AM4 platform matures.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Average as of right now, but should improve. It appears that Ryzen/AM4 was a little rushed, and the products show it. This board recognises my 2666 DDR4 ram as 2133. Even with the latest BIOS of 1.2, it won't auto recognise anything higher. You can set it higher yourself, but then sometimes the PC doesn't boot. The boot time is quite bad too, you can see a black screen for up to 15-20 seconds before POST, it gets worse if you play around with the RAM speeds Apparently BIOS 1.3 addresses this, according to the forums, but it is in test and I don't recommend using it until it is actually released. Other than that, it seems like a good AM4 board, and is great if you don't want the bells and whistles (and cost) of the X370 boards I don't bother with the LED lights on the board, since it is under my desk, but they do look nice, and you can attach an LED strip to it. I don't use the MSI Gaming app or anything else that comes with it, and the MSI Live Update is mostly useless, so I just update manually from their website if I think I need to. BIOS is easy enough to use, the mouse works fine with it and it has Basic and Advanced modes. Updating the BIOS is easy too; whack the BIOS on a USB stick, reboot the PC, enter the BIOS, choose the OC mode, and it will reboot and let you select the BIOS from the USB to update. But keep an eye on their site and forums to see when it has a good BIOS that correctly detects RAM speeds and boots fast without a problem. If you don't mind being an early adopter, and running into a few teething problems, then this board will be fine. One thing to note. it has debug lights on the board, very handy if something is wrong and the board refuses to boot, like, with me, I forgot to connect the CPU power. There is a light that will always be lit on the board, called iGPU, which basically means you are using a CPU without integrated GPU (Ryzen)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value, Good Quality , Decent Motherboard For AM4 I bought this board as it was the only one in stock on launch day for Ryzen. I thought id keep it a few weeks till the great motherboards come in stock. 3 weeks later , im happy with it, no need to upgrade, its a cracking little board, decent overclocking and regular bios updates, 1.32 at the moment. Cant see me changing it for a good few years.
