The MOTU 8M is part of MOTU's new line of thunderbolt interfaces this one in particular focuses on high quality mic inputs with built in hardware limiting on all channels. With Thunderbolt and USB 2.0 connections built in with the possibility to work across Windows and Mac this interface is already compatible enough with most systems, this one though adds in something new. AVB networking is featured in this interface allowing you to connect a large amount of interfaces together over ethernet connections. You can immediately connect another AVB compatible device to the 8M though if you need more than two devices you can connect them up to an AVB switch (or up to 7 switches). There are lots of benefits of AVB the main ones being that it turns your normally proprietary system into a completely modular open standard system allowing you to mix and match how you need it and the ability to extend the range and connectivity of your devices as you see fit. Being able to connect one interface into each room in a multi room studio installation for example can really help the overall efficiency of the studio. Overall you can stream 512 channels of audio across the AVB system which is more than nearly any studio would need.
That is not where the 8M stops innovating though. The entire range of AVB networked thunderbolt interfaces can be controlled via a web app on nearly any platform including tablets and smart phones. This is great for those who want to work away from the interfaces or have them split up across the building and connected via AVB. It also allows you to control the mix from anywhere you can be connected to the same network as the interfaces and the AVB switch. To get these features to work all you need to do is connect a WI-FI router into the AVB Switch and it allows you to connect to all the devices on the same network.
Providing 8 Mic/Line/Instrument combo XLR/Jack ports each with +48v phantom power available individually and working at 24Bit 192kHz. The M8 also has 8 Analog (line) outputs, optical in and out, as well as world clock in and out available. Like the rest of the range all inputs and outputs can be monitored using the front LCD panel.

Add a 2nd MOTU AVB interface (1248, 8M or 16A) with a simple Cat-5e ethernet cable. Connect up to five MOTU interfaces using a MOTU AVB Switch (sold separately). Build a network with multiple interfaces and computers using standard AVB switches and network cabling, with ultra-low network latency, even over long cable runs (hundreds of meters). Stream hundreds of audio channels among devices and computers on the network.
